McCarthy Points the way to Intermediate Football with Surperb Display - Mon, 19 Feb 2007

Junior A 1-13 Junior B 2-6

A large crowd turned out in Russell Park to witness an action packed game played with real passion & intensity. Lorcan McCarthy turned in a superb display of finishing to send Voilet Mudloo's troops to the Promised Land of Intermediate Football. The Junior A Footballers have had many final day setbacks in the past but this was their day, no doubt about it. Right from the offset, they meant business. A power packed opening twenty minutes from the Junior A Footballers paved the way to Intermediate Football, but not without being put under severe pressure when matters were levelled by two superbly taken goals in the opening minutes of the second half. Special congratulations to stalwart of the team, Vinnie Bruen who put in another fine display at centre back.

The Junior A Footballers started with real determination firing over the opening four points of the game with wing forward Ciaran Greene opening his account with only twenty seconds on the clock. Corner forward Enda Brady soon found the target when cutting in neatly on his right to point. Wing back Tom Broderick added another point when raiding down the right to fire over. The Junior A's were rampant with Enda Kane & Conor Clavin in the engine room performing particularly well. Clavin capped a superb opening peroid firing over a monster point from 50 yards out.

The ever-reliable Pat Whitty opened the Junior B's account with a customary left boot strike from close range. The Junior A's suffered a set-back shortly after this when their superb man marking corner back Brian Fogarty had to go off injured. McCarthy soon opened his account with a superbly taken 45'. McCarthy & Paul Brady were performing very well in the half forward for the Junior A's, winning the majority of the breaking ball around the midfield sector. Enda Kane chipped in with a point and the Junior B's looked in trouble.

The A's were on a real run but the Junior B's cut their deficit to three points when Paul Whitty and Joe Cassidy pointed. The Junior A's finished the half strongly when Michael Walsh darted through the Junior B's defence to earn a close range free which McCarthy converted with ease. McCarthy added another point to give the Junior A's a comfortable half time cushion of 5 points.

The Junior A Footballers started the second half as the finished the first when centre forward Paul Brady pointed from 21 yards out. The Junior B Footballers soon began to dominate around the middle with Des Carolan turning the tables on Conor Clavin. Carolan providing the platform for centre forward Joe Cassidy to provide the ever-lethal Junior B full forward line with much needed ball.

The Junior B pressure soon counted on the scoreboard when Cassidy played a neat ball into Dave O'Connor who turned Dave Redmond to fire low to the net. Within two minutes, the game was level when substitute William Corbett found the back of the net after some neat inter link play between himself and Maurice Curran. The tide was turning in the Junior B's favour but soon the experience of the Junior A's told.

The centre field area was a real battle ground with some superb blocking & hassling being carried out by both teams. Both teams were finding it hard to register the ever-crucial score, but McCarthy soon stepped up and fired over three sublime points. His first point was a 45', beautifully stroked over the bar. McCarthy then stepped up to fire over two-side line balls, one from the left and one from the right. A real master class in point kicking. One was very reminiscent of Maurice Fitzgerald's point in Thurles against the Dubs in 2001.

Paul Whitty cut the deficit to two with a calmly taken free but the final blow for the Junior B's came when Ciaran Greene fisted the ball to the net to leave five between the sides. Whitty again cut the deficit to four but the Junior A Footballers where not to be denied a place in Intermediate Football next year.

Well done to both teams. You are a credit to the club. Best of Luck to the Junior A Footballers in Intermediate Football this year. It's a historic day for the club as well. We are the only club in Dublin to have 3 teams in the top four leagues. Hard Luck to the Junior B Footballers. You performed superbly & the best of luck in the Championship Final in the coming weeks.

A Big thank to both management team's who have put in tremendous work over the last few years to get both teams to this point. Keep up the good work.
