Junior A Footballers Dig Deep To Snatch Late League Win From Garda - Sun, 1 Jul 2007

St Brigids 1-7 Garda 1-6

Noel Cassidy's Junior 1's were forced to fight all the way to claim the spoils against a seasoned Garda outfit in Thursday's AFL Division 5 encounter in Russell Park. For long periods of the game the Saints were in control of proceedings yet never fully killed of the Garda challenge. Leading by 0-2 to 0-1 after 15 minutes, the Castleknock men struck with the half's only goal when Willa Corrbett was on hand to stab home from close range.

The reminder of the half remained tight but it was the Westmanstown men who, with the aid of a strong breeze, picked off some fine long range scores to leave the sides level at the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with both sides finding consecutive scores hard to come by. However, by the 50 minute the Junior 1's looked to have finally pulled clear. Well taken points from Dessie Carolan, Stephen Moore and Paul Greening left a three point gap between the sides as the game entered the final minutes. However, the vital insurance point never came and with an air of inevitability, the Gardai snatched an unlikely goal to leave the sides level at 1-6 a piece.

The Russell Park men, however, dug deep showing more desire to claim both points and when Joe Cassidy set substitute Colm Doyle free on the 21, the Leaving Cert student duly obliged leaving the final score St Brigids 1-7 Garda 1-6.
