Senior Footballers Made To Work Hard by St Maurs in Champo Clash - Fri, 12 Sep 2008
St Brigids 2-10 St Maurs 2-5 The Senior Footballers set-up a group decider with Ballymun Kickhams on Saturday the 20th when they overcame St Maurs in Parnell Pk. The lads never really got going and had Kevin Bonner to thank for his superb finish towards the end to put the game to bed. There was pride in the Naomh Maur dressing room following last night's Evening Herald Dublin SFC Group 1 contest in Parnell Park. It was a second successive defeat for the Rush men, but they'll take many positives from the hour. And it was a huge improvement from their heavy opening loss to Ballymun Kickhams. The Division 2 crew played with purpose. There was pace throughout the side and they defended well. They never let Brigid's into any sort of rhythm and the Rusell Park men could never relax. And it was only in the last couple of minutes when Kevin Bonner drove home the decisive goal that the Dublin 15 team knew they were going to reach the shore safely. There was a decent crowd in the stand from the North County and they gave their club every encouragement. As they went for the tea and kit kats, it was 1-5 to 1-4 in favour of Maur's. A Brigid's fan was worried. "Ah, it's only half-time," responded his friend. Yet Maur's maintained their tempo, and every score Brigid's got they had to work extra hard to create the space for the opening. Maur's had a gifted centre half-forward in Vinny Whelan. His free-taking was spot on in the early stages, and it was from the placed ball, out on the right sideline at the scoreboard end that his effort managed to squirt into the net in the 17th minute. A minute later, a river dance of a finish from Rory Gallagher brought a Brigid's goal following terrific approach play by Barry Cahill, but two minutes into the second period, Anto Kelly's angled drive fooled Alan Nolan stole into the net. 2-5 to 1-4 for Maur's. It was time for Brigid's, last year's finalists, to shake and rattle, but still Maur's didn't roll over. Yet seven strikes without reply eventually decided it. They came from Paddy Andrews, Alan Daly, his second gem of the evening, Graham Norton, the impressive Lorcan McCarthy (2), Declan Lally and a 57th minute goal from Bonner. Scorers - St Brigid's: L McCarthy 0-3 (3f), R Gallagher, K Bonner 1-0 each, A Daly, Paddy Andrews 0-2 each, Mark Cahill (f), G Norton, D Lally 0-1 each.
