Inter 2 Footballers Topple Table Toppers Lucan in Rain Soaked League Clash - Mon, 13 Jul 2009

St Brigids 0-9 Lucan Sarsfields 0-8

For the second time in 4 days our Intermediate 2 footballers overcame stubborn opposition, this time in the form of the previously undefeated Lucan Sarsfields, to put themselves firmly back in contention for promotion to AFL 3. Played at a rain drenched 12th Lock, the Castleknock men began brightly and led 0-04 to 0-01 after 20 minutes, with Eoin O?Brien (0-03) and Paul Whitty (0-01) bagging the early scores. Lucan were playing catch up from that point onwards but succeeded in reducing the Brigids lead to one before Whitty added two excellent points, both from acute angles, to give the Russell Park men a 0-07 to 0-05 half-time advantage.

With the wind to their advantage in the second period, Sarsfields began promisingly converting 2 frees and a ?45 to level the contest. The game still hung in the balance with just over ten minutes remaining and it was Lucan who took the initiative taking the lead for the first time in the tie. However, Cassidy?s men are made of stern stuff and when Eoin O?Brien slotted over the equalising point with 5 minutes remaining the Brigids men showed the greater heart and desire to grind out a winning score.

The decisive point arrived after Mark Kehir collected the ball wide on the right before setting up the on rushing full-forward, Alan Beirne who expertly angled his shot over the bar. Well done to the lads, who now face St Judes on Wednesday week in Russell Park at 19.45 looking to continue their fine current form.

St Brigids: Kevin O?Donovan, Tony Hughes, Niall Ryan, Ryan McAnerin, Cian O?Sullivan, Se Smith, Joe Toomey, Stephen Moore, Seamus Lynam, Mark Kehir, Joe Cassidy, Gordon Cribbon, Paul Whitty (0-04), Alan Beirne (0-01) Eoin O?Brien (0-04).

Subs: Allan Hughes for Seamus Lynam.
