Barry Cahill & Paddy Andrews Help Dublin Stem Kildare Tide to Win Leinster Title - Tue, 14 Jul 2009
Congrats to Barry Cahill, Paddy Andrews, Kevin Bonner & Declan Lally on their superb Leinster Final Truimph over Kildare. Barry scored a super goal and was solid all over the field. Paddy produced a great 2nd half display to block out Kildare's attacking threat. Report from Herald.ie: Dublin 2-15 Kildare 0-18 Dublin won their fifth Leinster SFC title in a row yesterday despite playing the majority of their final encounter against Kildare with 14 men. Bernard Brogan landed a magnificent seven-point haul to swing the tie in favour of the Dubs. Brogan bagged three late scores to sink the Lilywhites after a pulsating clash at Croke Park. The Dubs stormed out of the traps and were 1-03 to the good with Kildare heads still seemingly in the dressing- room. Wing-back Barry Cahill blasted a fine individual goal, and Kieran McGeeney's men looked like they were in for a long afternoon. But the Lilywhites found their groove and Ken Donnelly settled them down with three points. Alan Smith, James Kavanagh and Padraig O Neill also got on the scoreboard as the visitors grew in confidence. Dublin's early charge petered out and when centre-back Ger Brennan received a straight red card in the 18th minute following a clash with Donnelly, the game was turned on its head. Ronan Sweeney edged Kildare ahead for the first time before the Dubs clocked up a crucial second goal. Alan Brogan lobbed into Jason Sherlock, who expertly turned and fired into the net. Kildare bounced back though and points from John Doyle, Dermot Earley and Sweeney gave them a 0-12 to 2-5 half-time lead. Ciaran Whelan was sprung from the bench and he brought Dublin level, and the Brogan brothers soared over to give the capital a twopoint lead. Pat Gilroys side, despite being a man down, bossed the third quarter, but with less than 10 minutes to play, Kildare drew level through substitute Robert Kelly. However, Bernard Brogan notched two scores to put the Dubs back in front. John Doyle and Mike Conway were on target to bring Kildare level, but Brogans three late scores finally put the seal on a pulsating afternoon of football that saw the Dubs lift the Leinster title once again. |
