Colm Doyle Points the Way to Inter 2 Footballers League Win Over St Judes - Fri, 24 Jul 2009

Our Intermediate 2 footballers continued their impressive recent form on Wednesday evening when they defeated a stubborn St Judes outfit by 0-07 to 0-05, a result which leaves Noel Cassidy's men firmly in contention for promotion to AFL 3. Following several days of persistent rain, the heavy Russell Park pitch was not going to be conducive for a high scoring contest and that proved to be case as both defences remained on top throughout.

Despite the conditions, the Brigids full-forward line of Doyle(above), Whitty and McAvenue were a thorn in the Judes side from the throw in and within minutes both Doyle and Whitty had converted early frees to put the home side in front. Enda Crennan soon replied for Judes before the excellent Mark Kehir supplied Doyle for his second and best score of the half. It wasn't long before wing-back Cian O'Sullivan got in on the act and his superb 30 yards effort left the home side in front at the break, 0-04 to 0-03.

An early Paul Whitty free extended the Brigids lead to two points before two long range frees drew the Templeogue men level. However, as has been the case in all four of their previous games, Noel Cassidy's men once again produced a resolute final 10 minutes, to turn a potential draw into victory. On this occasion it was the excellent Colm Doyle who grabbed the winning scores, as his close range free and outrageous 40 yard effort saw the Blanchardstown men win their fifth successive league outing on the trot. The lads now have a well-earned 4 week break before they face a difficult run in against St Finians, Erins Isle, Innisfails and Kilmacud Crokes. Well done to the lads and keep up the hard work.

St Brigids: Kevin O'Donovan, Tony Hughes, Se Smith, Niall Ryan, Cian O'Sullivan (0-01), Allan Hughes, Stephen Moore, Joe Toomey, Seamus Lynam, Gordon Cribbons, Joe Cassidy, Mark Kehir, Colm Doyle (0-04), Paddy McAvenue, Paul Whitty (0-02).

Subs: Kevin Bonfil for Seamus Lynam, David Buckley for Paddy McAvenue, Brian Smyth for Mark Kehir (inj), Sean O?Sullivan for Joe Cassidy.
