Junior C Footballers Show Great Spirit to Reach Champo Quarter-Finals defeating St Margarets - Fri, 14 May 2010

Through a combination of youth and experience, our Junior C footballers outclassed St Margarets on Thursday evening to advance to the quarter finals of the Junior D Football Championship. The midfield pairing of Sean McGeady and Sean Campbell started the game well for St. Brigid?s, with Mark O Regan also contributing an exceptional display of fielding around the middle of the park.

With corner forward Conor Brennan a constant threat throughout, scores inevitably followed from Dec Barron along with an excellent left footed score by James Campbell. The full back line also held firm against any Margaret?s attack with David Grogan a commanding presence around the square. A well worked point by Vinny O Farrell after some neat interplay with Mark O?Regan, sent Brigids in leading 0-04 to 0-02 at half time Margarets had the game level at 4 points each within 5 minutes of the re-start and with a strong wind blowing in their favour - it seemed as if it was going to be a home win.

However, it was the Brigids men who soon kicked into gear. Mark Gilsenan began controlling centre back, allowing wing-backs Dec Barron and Colm Laffan to pour forward at every opportunity. Brigid?s soon made this pressure count on the scoreboard with Sean Campbell and Mark O Regan contributing 3 points between them. St. Margaret?s came back with another 2 points to leave the minimum between the sides, before the switch of Blair Fanning into full forward decided the game.

Just after the switch, a long ball from midfield found Fanning in behind the full back and with only the keeper to beat, Fanning crashed an unstoppable half volley into the bottom right hand corner. Despite playing on with a bandaged head, Mark Gilsenan and full-back David Crehan continued to pour forward from the full back line at every opportunity, keeping the Margarets lads at bay. Fanning, inspired by his goal, went on to score 2 further exceptional points to leave the score 1.09 to 0.07 at the final whistle, sending Brigids into the quarter finals. Well done to Bren and the lads who now face Cuala in the quarter finals in late August. In the meantime, they face a tricky league game against St Finians (N) on Sunday afternoon. All support, help and new players are always welcome.
