Inter 2 Footballers Enjoy Pre-Season Training Camp in Kilbaha, Co. Clare - Wed, 13 Feb 2008
Noel Cassidy's newly promoted Intermediate footballer's set off to the spectacular west Clare village of Kilbaha last Friday afternoon to celebrate last season?s League and Championship double and to get the new season off to a positive start. In total, a group of twenty five footballers, along with the management team, travelled to the Atlantic coastline where they were warmly welcomed by Maureen Walsh and the staff of the 'Lighthouse Inn'. With a restaurant, serving fabulous locally caught fish, bedrooms, a shop, a well stocked bar and live music all located on sight, it didn't take the lads long to settle in for the weekend! Unsurprisingly, Saturday morning arrived with many of the team nursing groggy heads, but the business end of the weekend, a game against the 2005 Munster Junior Football Finalists Naomh Eoin, meant there was little time for a lie on! Following a week of persistent rain, however, both the local pitch in Naomh Eoin and the pitch in neighbouring town of Kilkee were water-logged so the game was moved to the beautiful beech on Kilkee strand. With both the throw in time and the length of the game now being dictated by the incoming tide, manager Noel Cassidy's description of the game as 'An experience of a lifetime' certainly proved to be true.
The game itself was a very entertaining affair with both sides playing some fabulous football on a surprisingly effective surface, a surface which was arguably better than some grass pitches in Dublin! Friday Night's demanding escapades looked to have taken no ill effect on the Brigids team as the lads ran out comfortably winners in a keenly fought contest. The Atlantic ocean supplied the lads with the after match showers, while Naomh Eoin half-forward, Patrick Foley, then welcomed the lads to his family run bar for the post match celebrations. Saturday night was to continue in a similar fashion, as the fine food and porter continued to flow until the earlier hours of Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon provided the team with the opportunity to take in the breathing surrounding of Loop Head, while local Lighthouse Keeper Tom McInerney, gave the team a tour of the Loop Head Lighthouse before the lads reluctantly set on the road for home. The team as a whole would like to thank the people of Cross and Kilbaha for such an amazing weekend, where each member of the club was made feel so welcome. A special mention must go to the Staff of the 'Lighthouse Inn', everyone at Naomh Eoin GAA club and, in particular, to the Bonfil and O'Connor families for their incredible support of the team. |
