Inter 2 Footballers defeat Ballymun Kickhams in League Encounter - Tue, 8 Apr 2008

St Brigids 0-11 Ballymun Kickhams 0-6

St Brigids Intermediate 2 footballers gained their first AFL Division 4 league win of the season after overcoming a stubborn Ballymun Kickhams side in the scenic surrounding of Phoenix Park last Saturday evening. In a game that witnessed every facet of Ireland?s unique weather, hail stones, wind, rain and glorious sunshine, it was the Russell Park men who adapted best, winning out on a score line of 11 points to 6.

Noel Cassidys men began the game with the wind at their backs and slowly made their advantage count as points from Liam Greaney and Dessie Carolan saw them open up a two point lead. To their credit, Ballymun continued to plug away against the elements and clawed themselves game back to the game, levelling the scores after twenty minutes.

However, with the well-oiled machine that is Seamus Lynam, now in top gear at full forward, the Brigids men were soon back in control. Lynam firstly breaking a long ball for the onrushing Paul Whitty to slot over, while Lynam himself then got in on the act, sending over a fine point with his left peg. Two pointed frees from Whitty and Willa Corbett left the Saints leading 0-6 to 0-2 at the break.

With the wind now to their advantage Ballymun set into reducing Brigids lead and after 10 minutes of the second period the gap was reduced to two. Accurate scores from Mark Kehir and Liam Greaney were then traded with two Ballymun frees, ensuring that the difference between the sides remained at two as the game entering its final quarter.

St Brigids manager Noel Cassidy then made two telling switches, introducing industrious wing back Cormac Hughes and moving Stephen Moore to the full forward line. The change paid immediate dividends, with Hughes setting up Lynam for his second point of the game. Moore was then in on the act himself, collecting a fabulous Joe Cassidy pass before swinging over a fine point to stretch the Brigids led to four. Although, Ballymun continued to press solid defensive displays from Joe Toomey and Niall Ryan ensured that the Saints full back line would not be beached. It was then left to Willa Corrbett to make sure of the points as he thumped over the games final score in injury time.

St Brigids: Kevin O?Donovan, Tony Hughes, Niall Ryan, Joe Toomey, Cian O?Sullivan, Seamus Smyth, Stephen Moore (0-1), Kevin Bonfil, Dessie Carolan (0-1), Mark Kehir (0-1), Joe Cassidy, Liam Greaney (0-2), Willa Corrbett (0-2), Seamus Lynam (0-2), Paul Whitty (0-2).

Subs: Cormac Hughes for Liam Greaney(44), Paul Greaney for Dessie Carolan(49), James Campbell for Paul Whitty(58)
