St Brigids Intermediate 2 footballers recovered from an uncharacteristically sloppy start to comfortably see off the challenge of Templeogue Syngne Street in the opening round of the Junior A Football Championship on Sunday morning.

Played in a sun drenched Phoenix Park, the home side were slow out of the blocks and paid the price as Templeogue opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with a well worked team goal. However, the Brigids response was both swift and empathic as points from Seamus Lynam, Willa Corbett and Paul Whitty were followed by an exquisite Joe Cassidy goal from 14 yards. The Brigids resurgence continued to pay dividends as Lynam and Cassidy added further points, giving the Castleknock men a 1-7 to 1-03 half time advantage.

The second half began in a similar vain to the first as Templeogue emerged the brighter of the two sides, reducing the Brigids lead to two points. However, this was as good as it got for the visitors as the surging runs of Mark Kehir and Liam Greaney gradually cut open the Templeogue defence. On hand to convert this possession into scores was the in-form Seamus Lynam with 0-5, while the corner forward pairing of Willa Corbett and Paul Whitty ably assisted with 0-3 each. The difference between the sides could have been far greater but for some fabulous saves from the agile Templeogue keeper.

The lads now switch their attention to the Joy Cup, where they face Good Counsel on Saturday at 5p.m in Galtymore Road, knowing a win will see them through to the Cup Semi-Finals. Well done to the team and keep up the hard work.

St Brigids: Kevin O?Donovan, Tony Hughes, Seamus Smyth, Stephen Moore, Cian O?Sullivan, Allan Hughes, Joe Toomey, Kevin Bonfil, Dessie Carolan, Liam Greaney (0-1), Joe Cassidy (1-1), Cormac Hughes, Willa Corbett (0-3), Seamus Lynam (0-5), Paul Whitty (0-3).

Subs: Gordon Cribbon for Joe Cassidy (inj), Mark Kehir for Joe Toomey, Niall Ryan for Stephen Moore, Phil Kelly for Cormac Hughes, James Campbell for Paul Whitty
