An extraordinary Paul Whitty goal, three minutes into injury time salvaged a deserved draw for our Intermediate 2 footballers in their Joy Cup Semi-Final encounter with St Judes on Saturday evening. The home side made a solid start with centre forward Dessie Carolan opening the scoring with a fine individual score. Seamus Lynam and Paul Whitty added to the bright start before a measured Jude's reply saw the Tymon North men move into a 0-06 to 0-03 half time lead.

Their advantage, however, soon evaporated after the restart when Seamus Lynam was on hand to smash the ball to the net after Cormac Hughes's effort had cannoned back off the crossbar into the arms of the grateful full-forward. The sides traded scores for the remainder of the half before Judes edged a point ahead with the game entering the final 5 minutes. Then the drama began.

With 2 minutes remaining Colm Doyle was hauled down 50 yards out and goalkeeper Kevin O'Donovan strolled forward to nonchalantly angle the equaliser over the bar. Judes responded and with the game entering additional time the away side stole an unlikely goal after a high ball was punched in net, from what appeared to be a clear square ball. The referee informed both sides that a minute remained and in one final throw of the dice the home side surged forward before James Campbell engineered a free on the Judes 14 yard line. With the referee indicating that this was the final action of the game, Judes retreated 8 men to the goal line.

Undeterred by the mass defensive wall in front of him, corner forward Paul Whitty smashed the ball beyond a stunned Judes defence into the top left hand corner, sending the Russell Park faithful in raptures. Well done to the lads and their astonishing never say die team spirit. The Joy Cup Semi Final reply will most likely take place in 2 weeks time. In the meantime, the lads face St Finians of Newcastle next Saturday in Rathcoole at 6pm in an important league clash.

St Brigids: Kevin O Donovan (0-01), Tony Hughes, Niall Ryan, Ryan McAnerin, Cian O Sullivan, Allan Hughes, Se Smith, Kevin Bonfil, Joe Twomey, Stephen Moore, Dessie Carolan (0-1), David Buckley, Eoin O Brien, Seamus Lynam (1-01), Paul Whitty (1-03).

Subs: Cormac Hughes for Stephen Moore, Colm Doyle for Eoin O Brien, Willie Tyrell for David Buckley, James Campbell for Seamus Lynam.
