Inter 2 Footballers Saved By Converted Goal Scoring Machine Kevin Bonfil - Thu, 10 Sep 2009

St Brigids 1-9 St Finians N 0-8

or the second time in 7 days, our Intermediate 2 footballers produced an extraordinary second half revival, coming from 7 points down to beat St Finians of Newcastle 1-09 to 0-08 in their AFL 4 league clash in Rathcoole on Saturday evening. To claim the contest was a game of two halves would be an understatement. With a strong breeze behind them, the home side settled immediately from the throw in and with the aid of some fine long range shooting, they stormed into a 0-08 to 0-01 half time lead.

The opening exchanges of the second half were well contested and a solitary Colm Doyle point was all the game had to offer for the first 10 minutes of play. But in an inspired move, St Brigids captain Kevin Bonfil(above) was moved from midfield to the edge of the square where serious carnage ensued. Following a weaving Joe Twomey run, Bonfil found himself one and one with the keeper before expertly angling his shot into the far corner of the net.

The goal was amazingly the captains first in Brigids colours since his Minor days in 2002. With the momentum now with the Russell Park men, Finians were struggling to cope and were held scoreless for the entire second half, with Brigids full-back Niall Ryan particularly influential. At the other end, the Brigids forwards had awoken from their slumber and 7 unanswered points from Gordon Cribbon (0-02), Paul Whitty (0-02), Colm Doyle (0-02) and Joe Twomey (0-01) sealed a memorable Brigids win.

The victory leaves the lads in joint second place in the AFL 4 table with two games remaining against Kilmacud Crokes and Erins Isle. Before that, however, the lads face St Judes in their Joy Cup Semi Final reply on Saturday at 6 in Tymon North.

St Brigids: Kevin O?Donovan, Tony Hughes, Niall Ryan, Ryan McAnerin, Cian O Sullivan, Allan Hughes, Se Smith, Kevin Bonfil (1-0), Joe Twomey (0-01), David Buckley, Dessie Carolan, Gordon Cribbon (0-02), Paul Whitty (0-03), Seamus (Fred) Lynam, Colm Doyle (0-03).

Subs: Eoin O Brien, James Campbell, Stephen Moore, Kevin Brennan.
