Inter Footballers Enjoy Great Weekend of Football & Craic in Clonakilty, Cork - Wed, 17 Feb 2010

After a long 2009 season, our Intermediate footballers travelled to the west Cork town of Clonakilty for a strict training weekend ahead of their 2010 campaign which begins this week. Top of the agenda was a challenge game against a "Clonakilty Select" on Saturday afternoon. The current Cork Senior Football Champions boast a state of the art, purpose built GAA complex on the edge of the town after relocating during the Celtic Tiger years.

Unfortunately for many of the lads, their late night excursions in Mick Finn's pub and in Club Vectra looked to have hindered their preparations for Saturday afternoons encounter. After a poor opening half, Clonakilty lead by 3-08 to 0-05 and looked to be coasting to a routine victory. However, after a vicious half-time grilling by The Beard, the visitors emerged a transformed side and blitzed their visibly shaken opponents by scoring 2-08 in a magical 20 minute spell. Eoin O Brien was tormentor-in-chief, scoring an impressive 2-04.

With time running out, Clon turned to former Cork Senior Footballer, Captain Brian Murphy, to steady the ship and his calming presence saw the home side hold on by the skin of their teeth to a 1 point victory. The superb spirit shown on the pitch was matched in the town later, where Brian and Co. took the lads on a tour of the town.

The team would like to thank Clonakilty GAA club for their warm welcome and, in particular, to their Club Secretary John Loughnane and Football mentor Casey O Donovan who began arranging the visit back in October. The gates of Russell Park are open for the Clon lads and we look forward to returning their hospitality in the near future.
