Inter Footballers Advance In Junior 'A' Champo In Tight Tussle with Vincents - Tue, 20 Apr 2010
St Brigids 2-10 St Vincents 2-9 Our Intermediate footballers progressed to the last 16 of the Junior Football Championship on Sunday morning defeating St Vincent's by a single point, although the lads decided to do things the hard way, keeping the Russell Park crowd on the edge of their seats until the final minute. By the 20th minute, the home side looked to have one foot in the next round as the full forward line of O'Meara, Whitty and Doyle dismantled the Vincent's defence with ease.
The Russell Park men led 2-02 to 0-02 with Whitty the finisher on both occasions. Colm Doyle soon got in on the act and his monstrous 45 yard effort stretched the lead even further. However, as St Vincent's side have done for years, the Marino men created a goal chance out of nothing and all of a sudden it was game on again, 2-05 to 1-03 at the break. Vincent?s fight back looked to have been quashed midway through the second half as Joe Cassidy and Colm Doyle kept the margin to four with the game entering the final ten minutes. A harsh decision by the referee gave Vincent's a penalty and a lifeline back into the game, only for captain Stephen Moore to brilliantly save the resultant spot kick. However, Vincent's tails were up and moments later the goal they so desperately needed duly arrived. A further point followed moments later to level the game, before the home side composed themselves in the final minute, to win a free close to goal. Colm Doyle did the honours to send Noel Cassidy's men into the last 16. Well done to the lads for showing such character in an enthralling game. They now face a very strong Cuala side, many whom won the Under 21 A title this year. The game takes place this Sunday at 11 in Hyde Park. Your support for the lads is greatly appreciated.
