U21 Hurlers fight back Superbly to edge out Na Fianna in Champo - Mon, 13 Feb 2006

St Brigids 2-12 Na Fianna 2-11

Well done to the U21 Hurlers who fought back superbly to defeat Na Fianna & progress to the next round of the Championship where they will face DIT. Playing against a very stiff breeze in the opening half, St Brigids only trailed by a point at the break. Alan Nolan firing home a penalty in the opening minutes & full forward David Smith fired the sliotar to the corner five minutes before the break. Paddy McAvenue also added a fine solo point, running 40 yards before firing over. Down a point a the break on a scoreline of 2-3 to 1-7, Brigids knew they would still have to up their game with Na Fianna's team pocessing several very good players including Dublin Minor star from last year, Tomas Brady.

Brigids soon levelled after the break with Paddy McAvenue firing over from distance after some neat work by Keith Fox & man of the match Willie Tyrell. Brigids soon edged ahead with scores from Tyrell & Sean O Sullivan but soon suffered a suvere blow when centre forward Ian Sheedy & wing forward Paddy McAvenue were sent off with eight minutes of the half elapsed. A very dubious decision by a very one sided referre. Brigids definitely having to work harder for a any free received. Brigids still plugged on & never gave up. Sean O Sullivan & Willie Tyrell playing like men pocessed. Sullivan was a real rock as centre back, men bouncing off him when challenged. The side swapped scores for a tension filled peroid after the sending-off, with Willie Tyrell taking over the free taking duties from Paddy McAvenue. Tyrell firing over three free's but Na Fianna soon edged ahead with ten minutes remaining with a fortunate goal that was kicked to the net.

Two points down, St Brigids looked down but never gave up. Bren McInernery fired over a beautiful point off his left to leave the minimun between the sides. Keith Fox levelled up the match with two minutes remaining with a truly amazing point from the side line. Very much like Jamsie O Connor's point for Clare to win the All Ireland. But commonth the hour, commonth the man. Brigids were awarded a free after some superb blocking from Goalkeeper come full forward Alan Nolan. 70 yards out, Sean Sullivan stepped up & with no hesitation fired Brigids into the next round of the Championship. Well done to Paddy Winters, Michael Healy & Liam Plunkett.
