Junior Hurlers fight back superbly to edge out Liffey Gaels in Champo - Mon, 29 May 2006

St Brigids 1-8 Liffey Gaels 1-7

Cillian McCann proved the hero in this senior hurling clash against Liffey Gaels at Russell Park as his point four minutes from time finally separated these two teams after a nip-and-tuck contest.

The sides were level at 1-7 apiece after 56 minutes last Thursday evening, before McCann who ended the contest with 0-4 to his name sprinted forward to dissect the uprights and send the home support into delirium. That point proved to be the score that broke the camel's back, as try as they did, Gaels couldn't respond and the Russell Park boys ran out victors by the narrowest of margins.

It was the visitors who had started the contest the brighter as they led by a point after fifteen minutes, although they could have been further ahead as they were denied a blatant penalty (0-2 to 0-3).

And with the Brigid's midfield in disarray, Gaels continued to dominate in the ensuing minutes and pulled further clear to hold a three-point advantage at the short-whistle (0-3 to 0-6).Brigid's improved immensely in second half, however, and a pointed McCann free two minutes in reduced their arrears before Paul Carter scrambled home after an error by the Gaels' 'keeper to put the hosts in front for the first time (1-4 to 0-6).

Gaels leveled matters seconds later, before points from McCann (2) and Brian Condrum left Brigid's three points up with just fifteen minutes remaining. The game descended into a lull in the ensuing ten minutes, before Gaels sensationally leveled matters with a goal five minutes from time. But just when a draw looked inevitable, up stepped McCann to slot over the bar and claim the winning point.

Gaels desperately searched for an equalizer thereafter, but as the Brigid's defence stood firm, the Ballyfermot boys found it impossible to breakthrough. And the final whistle sounded soon after, leaving the Russell Park outfit with a slender one-point victory.
