Junior A Hurlers beat Ballyboden to Progress to Champo Semi-Finals - Sun, 28 Sep 2008
St Brigids 1-7 Ballyboden St Enda's 0-8 Goalkeeper Willie Bourke starred at both end sides as he pulled off crucial saves as well as scoring the only goal of the game. The game was real nip and tuck with both sides enjoying periods of dominance in the opening half. Maurice Curran opened the Brigids account inside in the opening 2 minutes, Curran striking over from the right wing reacting quickest to a Sean Duignan broken ball. Boden responded instantly and began to get in their grove as they led 0-4 to 0-2 after 15 minutes. Willie Bourke then came out to the field to take a free from within his own 65. Bourke struck the ball high into the Boden square & went straight into the net as several defenders called it but none of them went for it. Brigids had their tails up and pushed home their advantage with Bernard Duggan and two Conor Morris frees pushing them ahead. Boden narrowed their deficit at the break to 2 points with a late free. Leading 1-4 to 0-5 at the break, the lads needed to up it a gear and they did so. Defence was the foundation as they pressurised Boden all the time with David Brooks getting several nose bleeds as he roamed out around the midfield area. Glenn Markey & John Boyle commanded the full back line well showing their experience. The game was already tight with both sides not giving much away but with only 2 points between the sides with less than 10 minutes remaining, Paul Keane slotted over a sublime 35 yard side line cut. Boden were attacking in droves but Mick Cousin, Dec Cahill & Tommy Fitzsimons stood tall in the half back line to cut out their full forward lines supply. Mick Galvin was as usual covering acres of ground in midfield. Bourke pulled off a superb save nearing the death but the lads got their just rewards reaching the Semi-Finals of the Championship. |
