Junior A Hurlers defeat St Finian's of Swords Impressively in Champo - Mon, 19 May 2008
St Brigids 3-9 St Finian's of Swords 1-8 Great defensive play from our Junior A Hurlers laid the foundation for a thoroughly deserved Championship win over St Finian's of Swords. The backs held St Finian's to 1-3 from play. Ex senior John Boyle marshalled the defence well from full back with David Brooks & Glen Markey holding their men scoreless in the first half. Paul Keane gave a masterful display in the half back line blunting the thread of the St Finian's danger man. Pat Rohan stood out in the forwards earning his first free which was converted by Conor Morris. Rohan was not finished yet as he won the ball on the left wing and ran 40 yards before finishing the ball to the net from 14 yards. Bernard Duggan was soon on the score sheet as he added a point from the right wing. Finian's hit back with two pointed frees but a Stephen Kelly point soon had the hosts four points ahead. Sean Duignan opened his account from full forward with a robust catch and finish from 25 yards. Finian's fought back with two late points to leave the scores 1-5 to 0-5 at the break. Brigids were the happier team at the break having played against a strong breeze in the opening half. Brigids raced out of the traps in the second half with points from Rohan and Duignan as well as pointed Morris free. Finian's were feeling the pressure as Brigids piled forward to push home their advantage. This was soon found as Sean Duignan powered the sliotar to the net after turning his man inside out, turning back the clock to the days in the blue of Dublin. Pat Rohan was back in on the act as he got his second goal to end the match. Finian's heads dropped as they knew the game was lost. They got a late goal but Brigids were full value for their win. |
