Junior Hurlers Just Fail to Reel Castleknock in League Clash in Russell Pk - Sat, 17 Apr 2010

St Brigids 5-12 Ballyboden St Enda's

Our Junior hurlers superb second half revival just fell short of the line on Sunday morning as they went down fighting 2-12 to 1-10 against Castleknock in their second AHL 5 league game in Russell Park. With Castleknock's first team relegated from AHL 4 last season and Tim O'Leary's men promoted from AHL 6, it was always going to be a tough battle for the Russell Park men. Their cause wasn?t helped by an uncharacteristically lacklustre opening half, with points from Stephen Moore (0-1), Eoin Tynne (0-01) and Brian Mulcahy (0-01) all the Brigids men had to show for their efforts on the scoreboard.

This left the lads with a mountain to climb as the trailed 1-09 to 0-03 at the interval. But climb the mountain they did, as the returning Neil Plunkett (0-02) hauled his side back into the game with two inspirational points straight from the restart. The sublime free-taking of Brian Mulcahy (0-03) reduced the arrears even further before a Brendan Roche bullet from the 20 yard line left only 2 points between the sides, 1-12 to 1-10 with 5 minutes remaining. Unfortunately for the home side, lady luck was not on their side as a late 'goal' which seemed to cross the Castleknock goal line was controversially not awarded by an unsighted referee.

Salt was rubbed into the wound moments later when a long hopefully Castleknock free landed into a crowded square, deflecting off the helmet of an unfortunate Sean Frane and into the net. Well done to Tim O?Leary, John Mulcahy and the lads for giving the Russell Park faithful an inspirational second half display. The lads know that if they can match that intensity and passion for the remainder of the season, they stand an excellent chance of progressing in the Junior B Hurling Championship. Thanks also to Castleknock St Thomas?s for a sporting and hard-fought battle and best of luck to them for the rest of the league.
