Sports Medicine Ireland's Certificate in Sports First Aid and Injury Management is the leading international course of its type, currently being held in 11 countries. It is suitable for sports coaches, instructors, club officials, athletes, and parents. No previous first aid knowledge is required. Certification is valid for three years.

Can you answer to these questions?

  • Name four symptoms of concussion
  • What pain medicine should not be given to a head-injured athlete?
  • What is the first aid treatment for a corneal abrasion?
  • When can heat be used in the treatment of soft tissue injury?
  • What are the key symptoms for a burst eardrum?
  • What are three tests used in the assessment of a suspected spinal injury?
  • What are the three assessments for an injury to the eye?
  • Name two medical conditions where cold therapy should NOT be used.
  • Name three symptoms of internal bleeding.

The course includes how to assess and manage the following injuries:- Soft tissue injury, fractures, facial lacerations, tooth avulsion, dental fractures, corneal abrasion, blow-out fracture, foreign body in the eye, orbital fracture, subconjunctival haemorrhage, auricular haematoma, perforated eardrum, nosebleed, nasal fracture, external haemorrhage, internal haemorrhage, shock, patella dislocation, ankle sprain, contusion of the quadriceps, rib fractures, finger dislocation, skull fracture, concussion, cardiac arrest, sternoclavicular & acromioclavicular sprains, elbow dislocation, knee ligament sprains, and spinal injury.

The course has been compiled by an international team of over 40 physicians and surgeons from Ireland, England, Italy, Spain, Russia, the United States, Canada, Poland, Australia, and Portugal. It is updated six times per year to make sure it represents best medical practice.

It is an intensive one-day course running from 9.00am to 6.00pm with a one-hour break at 1.00pm. The next course in Dublin is on SATURDAY 1st July in the Stephen?s Green Hotel (end of Harcourt Street). The cost of the course is 40 EURO per person. Advance e-mail booking is essential.
