St Brigids GAA Supporting Builders' Week 2005 in Cape Town - Fri, 14 Oct 2005
The countdown is on to Builders' Week 2005. More than 650 volunteers are signed up for this year's trip to Cape Town. This makes it the biggest ever exodus of volunteers from Ireland to a charity event overseas. The response to Niall Mellon's call for builders was so huge that the 2005 Township Challenge is to be staggered over two weeks. The first group of around 200 builders will leave Ireland on the 28th of October for one week. The next batch of 450 builders will leave on the 4th of November to continue the building blitz. Their target is to build at least 100 brick houses for the residents of Imizamo Yethu in Cape Town. This is the third Township Challenge and is the biggest to date. In 2003 we had 150 volunteers and last year that number had more than doubled to 350 builders. The hard work and generosity of this year's builders means that more than 2.6 million euros has been raised so far. Currently we are really short of brick layers and plasterers. These are the trades that we have been shortest on for the last two years. If you are viewing this trades page and either yourself or someone you know has experience in brickwork or plastering, please ask them to get in touch.. If you want to come on the mission you need to raise €4,000, and yes we know this is a lot of money, but it is amazing once you get a bit of help from friends, family, work etc... how quickly you begin to get towards your target..
