Enda Timoney Shows The Dublin Senior Hurlers The Way on Handball Court - Thu, 15 Dec 2011

Every Wednesday for the last six weeks, members of the history making Dublin Senior Hurling squad have been playing Handball as part of their pre-season conditioning. The National League winning team of 2011 have been put through their paces each week by Monaghan native, and St Brigid's clubman Enda Timoney who has exposed both the 40x20 and One-Wall codes of our game to the players. The players have been using the excellent facilities at St Brigid's GAC, and the indoor sports hall at Thomas Davis GAA club, where great interest in the game has arisen among the children of the two clubs as they see their idols playing Handball.

Shane Ryan, Daire Plunkett, David O Callaghan, Niall Corcoran and Cian McBride are among several of the regulars who are showing some Handball potential, both in 40x20 and One-Wall. St Brigid's player Daire played Handball throughout his teens and has a real admiration for the game, "Handball is a great conditioning game, with a lot of short, rapid movements that can really help keep us sharp during the off-season."

Handball and Hurling are widely acknowledged as two sports that compliment each other very well, indeed many famous Hurlers have strong backgrounds playing Handball. Most notable of these include Kilkenny's current star Richie Hogan who won a World Handball title back in 2003, and of course the legendary DJ Carey, who has in fact more All-Ireland Handball titles than Hurling titles.

Under the expert guidance of Enda Timoney, who knows, maybe some of these Hurling stars will feature in the World Handball Championships 2012 that are being held in the Citywest Hotel, Dublin next October.
