Eoin Kennedy takes part in Fundraisor this Saturday in aid of Aiseiri Treatment - Fri, 11 Nov 2005
DJ Carey will be donning his eyeguards instead of his helmet this weekend, when he makes a return to the handball court to face World Handball Champion, Paul Brady, at O'Loughlin's GAA Club in Kilkenny on Saturday afternoon. The showdown between Carey, a former U23 World Singles and Doubles Champion and Brady will be one of the highlights of a two day tournament organised by Kilkenny's Michael 'Duxie' Walsh, in aid of the Aiseiri Treatment Centre in Cahir, Co. Tipperary - a renowned centre for the treatment of alcoholics, gamblers and other chemically dependent people. Winner of 38 Senior All-Ireland Handball medals, Walsh has also persuaded the remaining top eight seeds in Ireland to play in the tournament. Speaking about his hopes for the weekend, DJ, who won three Senior All-Ireland Doubles titles with Duxie in the 40 x 20 court, said he is hoping to recover a little of the form which saw him win eleven All-Ireland titles in total. "It will be interesting for me to say the least to play against Paul Brady this weekend. I was making the decision to either go with hurling or handball when Paul was just turning senior so I've never played him before. He's the Men's Open World Champion for a reason so I?m in no doubt as to who's going to come out the victor but I hope I'll remember how to deliver a few kill shots and give him a run for a few points," said DJ. Likewise, Brady, who last month reached the Cavan County Football Final with his Mullahoran team mates, before losing to Cavan Gaels, is looking forward to playing the hurling ace. "I've heard from other players how DJ could knock out a killer shot or two in the handball court and obviously few can touch him on the hurling field. I'm hoping though that he?ll leave his hurley outside the court this weekend and then I might stand a chance," said Paul. Thanking all those who contributed to the event, organiser, Duxie Walsh said, "It will be fantastic to not only see my old playing partner, DJ, back on the court today but also the top seeds in Ireland and indeed the World. I'd like to sincerely thank them for giving up their time especially after having just returned from playing in America and also to everyone who sold tickets, bought tickets and is thinking of turning up this weekend. It is for a fantastic cause which will benefit so many individuals and their families." The draw for Saturday is: Sunday will feature the two Semi-Finals beginning at 11.00 a.m., the Aiseiri Prize Draw at 2.45 p.m. and the Grand Final scheduled for 3.00 p.m. Admission is only €5.00 on Saturday and €10.00 on Sunday. O'Loughlin's Gaels GAA Club is approximately 200m past Nowlan Park on the country rather than the town side of the stadium. |
