Eoin Kennedy Very Up Beat About Chances In World Championships - Wed, 7 Oct 2009

Dublin star handballer, Eoin Kennedy (St. Brigid's, Blanchardstown), confirmed his status as the country's top large (60X30) court player, when he topped-off a memorable domestic season, by linking-up with long-term doubles partner, Egin Jensen (Na Fianna, Glasnevin), to claim this year's GAA/M. Donnelly All-Ireland Softball (60X30) Men's Senior Doubles title, at The National Handball Centre, Croke Park..

The Dublin duo were forced to pull out all the stops to overcome a stern challenge from defending champions, Meath aces, Tom Sheridan and Brian Carroll (Kells), in an epic final, eventually sealing victory, over two games, on a scoreline of 21-20, 21-12. Two weeks previously, Kennedy captured his sixth consecutive (and seventh, overall) GAA/M. Donnelly All-Ireland Softball (60X30) Men's Senior Singles title, at headquarters, when he easily defeated young Westmeath ace, Robbie McCarthy Jnr. (Mullingar), again over two games, on a scoreline of 21-9, 21-7. Last June, the Dublin maestro bagged this year's GAA All-Ireland Hardball (60X30) Men's Senior Singles crown, only just missing out on a large (60X30) court "clean-sweep", by failing to net the Men's Senior Doubles title of the same championships, a feat he had accomplished in 2007.

This triple-success provides Kennedy with the ideal platform, heading into next month's World Championships, in Portland, Oregon, USA, where he will be defending his World Men's Open Doubles, while also competing in the Men's Open Singles grade. While all the matches at the World Championships are played on the small or international (40X20) court, the talismanic Dubliner knows that this season's large (60X30) court achievements, will stand to him: " It has been another great season for me, taking three out of the four All-Ireland large (60X30) court titles available - the only blip being the Hardball (60X20) Doubles title, which eluded us this year. I am really looking forward to the World Championships, competing in the Men's Open Singles grade, against top-quality opposition and also defending my Men's Open Doubles title" , said an upbeat Kennedy.
