St Brigid's Goes Into the West - Tue, 8 Nov 2005
Last Saturday morning at 8 o'clock saw Russell Park a bustling hive of activity as over fifty Nine and Ten year old players and another fifty parents headed into the west for the first visit of St Brigid's to the Salthill GAA club just outside of Galway City. The two packed buses stopped briefly for refreshments in Athlone before reaching Salthill around noon. First up was a hurling match with two teams at each of the age group's playing Salthill. Lots of thrills and spills ensued and the Brigid's players were pleased to see how evenly matched they were against their country cousins. Everything stopped for lunch then, as the large crowd had a well deserved break. The whole day was organised by Frances O'Malley from Castleknock Drive who has long standing connections with the Salthill club where her sister, just like Frances at St Brigid's is in charge of a juvenile team or three.
After lunch, with the weather still fine the code changed to football and this time there were 3 football teams at each level. Once again the games were exciting and close with very little between the teams at the end. Then it was back to the clubhouse at Pearse Park in Salthill where a fine feast was laid on for everyone, both adults and children alike. This echoed the hospitality earlier this year when Salthill GAA visited St Brigid's at Russell Park to kick start this unique Inter-Provincal series. All good things come to and end and it was now time for a tired but happy bunch of children and parents to board the bus again for the long tip back to Dublin 15. And what a long trip it was with traffic jams aplenty punctuated only by the sound of a noisy sing-song as fifty sets of lungs sang the classics with gusto. 9:30PM saw a tired but happy bunch home at last as plans were already being hatched for a return visit next year. If your child would like to take up either hurling , football, Camogie, Ladies football or handball why not check out what St Brigid's GAA has to offer on stbrigidsgaa.com or, if your children are aged between 5 and 9 just drop down to the Nursery on Friday evenings around 6pm or on Saturday mornings at 10am to see what's going on. |
