U9 Footballers progress nicely against St Vincents - Wed, 7 Dec 2005
Last Saturday in beautiful, clear, bright conditions St Brigid's Under 9's played St Vincent's in three hard contested games of football. On Pitch 1 St Brigid's were well matched by an organised St Vincent's. However, great goalkeeping from Eoin McAuley helped keep St Vincent's to a 1-point lead at half time. While good defence from Tadgh Brannigan, Ciaran Galvin and Eoin Kirk kept the blue and whites in check. Mid field saw some good skills from Niall Chambers, Gary McCabe and Conor Brown working tirelessly to fend off the opposition. Upfront Shane Hourihane cleared a number of dangerous balls, while Sean O'Malley was in good catching form and passing very nicely up towards goal. As usual plucky Luke Purthill took on all comers. In the second half the balance of the game tipped in favour of St Vincent's giving them the match.Another hard fought game between two well-balanced sides was played on Pitch 2. St Brigid's boys played with great heart showing good teamwork in front of goals where Alex Fowler made a number of good saves. James Griffin and Padraig Courtney strongly defended together with Conor Feeney who came into his own in the second half. Mid field saw good blocking and catching from Kevin Keogh and Liam Campbell supported by Colin Murphy. Upfront saw the visitors kept under pressure by Oisin Coyle and Stephen Daly who as always chased every chance to score, resulting in a lovely taken score for St Brigid's. Despite St Brigid's valiant efforts St Vincent's nosed ahead in the later part of the game. On Pitch 3 a fairly evenly balanced game was played with Stephen Murphy making a number of great saves in goals to ward off the Vincent's boys. In the backs Joseph O'Donovan Ryan cleared well and together with Anthony Healy, Eoin Molloy worked well to keep their opponents under pressure. In mid field nice passing from Daragh O'Neill resulted in a lovely score from Aran Connolly who was ably assisted by Sean O'Connell. Ciaran Meade together with Geoff Brookes worked hard for chances to score. While St Brigid's kept St Vincent's to a point at half time, the visitors came out strong in the second half claiming the game despite the efforts of the home team. The challenge for the St Brigid's boys is to use the skills learned at training during their matches. So practice, practice, boys! |
