Paddy Andrews impresses further as Dublin Minors suffer first defeat - Fri, 4 Mar 2005
Dublin's minor footballers suffered their first defeat of this year's Leinster minor football league being defeated by Kildare in Kill on Saturday afternoon. Kildare built an excellent platform for victory in the opening half and led by 1-6 to 0-3 at the break having played with a considerable wind in that opening period. Gary 'Chalkie' White was the star of the first half for the Lilywhites netting a goal in the sixth minute and preceeding that with a well take point. However, Dublin manager John Horan will be most unhappy about midfield where Kildare's Kieran Brennan and John Fogarty held a considerable advantage over Tomas Brady and Cillian Byrnes. Dublin's forwards as a result were deprived of possession and did not record their first score until the 18th minute when Paddy Andrews was fouled Paddy O'Connor converted the resultant free kick. O'Connor pointed from play in the 24th minute and an intelligent free by Cillian Byrnes to Martin Daly on the stroke of half-time gave Dublin their third score of the half. Things did improve for the Dubs in the second half with the switching of Kevin Nolan to marshall Gary White and John McCaffrey to centre back. Dublin full forward Paddy Andrews won a long delivery in the 35th minute turned and struck a perfect shot to the corner of the net . However, two points from Brian Mullally restored a six point advantage for the lillywhites, 1-9 to 1-3. Tomas Brady was moved to edge of the square and Dublin's most dangerous forward, Paddy Andrews to the 40 in a move that paid immediate dividends. Brady won the first ball that came his way, turned and netted. With 14 minutes to go and only three points in arrears it looked like Dublin would salvage something. Points from O'Connor in the 54th minute and Cathal Morley in the 59th minute narrowed the margin to the minimum. But Kildare rallied and Kieran Brennan and Alan Smith pointed in injury-time to secure the victory for the Lilywhites.
