U16 Footballers edge past Holder's Erins Isle in Tight Champo Contest - Wed, 29 Mar 2006 St Brigids 1-8 Erins Isle 0-9
Click Here for More Photos of the Match Championship quarter finals are often terse affairs and this was certainly the case today in the aptly named Longmeadows as St Brigid's and Erins Isle toyed with each other for much of this game. Isles missed a penalty when Jamie winters dived to save. Both sides clocked up just two points from play (Paulk Clerkin pointing twice for St Brigid's) with the rest coming from frees and at the interval Erins Isle went in just a point in front on a score line of 0-5 to 0-4. Star player of the first half for Brigid's was Sean Murray who won anything that was going at mid field. Last year Brigid's went out at the semi final stage to Ballyboden who were then beaten in the final by Isles and Isles started the 2nd half like a side anxious to repeat their previous exploits. Unfortunately for Isles no one had told Philip Carroll this and having been quiet by his standards in the first half he needed just one second of brilliance to find the net and suddenly it was game on with Brigid's 2 points to the good. A frantic ten minutes followed with Isles replying to the goal with two quick points to bring the sides level. With fifteen minutes to go there was nothing between the sides and the pace was now at championship level with no quarter given or asked. 2 fine point from Gavin McIntyre, a brace from Philip Carroll and one from Conor Kavanagh saw Brigid's end in front with a 2 point margin despite a late rally from a which yielded just a single score from this brave Isles team. The Brigid's defence was resolute throughout and McCarrick, Doyle and McEnerin put in fine performances under severe pressure. Up front Eoin O Brien and Conor Kavanagh were excellent as was Gavin McIntyre and David Buckley. The relief on the Brigid's line was obvious as the whistle blew and this U16 team piloted by Gerry McEntee and Liam Plunkett reached the semi final stage for the 2nd year running. There is a long way to go still though with the south side big guns of Kilmacud and Ballyboden still waiting in the wings. .
