U16 Footballers defeat St Vincents after Extra-Time to reach Champo Final - Tue, 25 Apr 2006

St Vincents 1-14 St Brigid's 4-6  (0-11 2-5 after Full time)

This was as exciting as they come. An enthralling encounter between these two Northside teams both fighting for the right to play Kilmacud in the Dublin U16 A championship final. Played at St Vincent's' home ground in Marino it was always going to be close and even though these two teams haven't met each other for over 12 months the intense rivalry between the sides was evident in the nervous start both sides made. Playing into a strong wind St Brigid's made hard work of the first half but despite being outplayed in some positions they went in level at half time mainly thanks to two fine goals from Philip Carroll and a solid defence.

The second half was a close fought and torrid affair with St Vincent's making good use of the wind and Brigid?s struggling to pick out their forwards. In an incredibly low scoring second half both sides managed only 3 points each with Philip Carroll scoring 2 of them and Brigid's David Buckley scoring one of the finest points this season with a magnificent score from far out on the wing. The St Brigid's defence was magnificent throughout in the face of a fine Vincent's team, which had scored numerous goals this season.

Alan McCarrick at full back and Jamie winters between the posts both stood out. At midfield Sean Murray was dominating and as the match went on Daire Plunkett slowly but surely began to outplay his man and feed numerous ball into the forward line The full time whistle signalled a short respite before two tired looking teams took to the field almost immediately for extra time. St Vincent's got the one and only score of the first half of extra time.

The play was tense and end to end stuff with many misses on both sides. With no break for half time the teams swapped over and after a couple of St Brigid's misses St Vincents scored another point to put them 2 points up with the game slowly swinging their way as the Brigid's heads started to drop and tired limbs began to seize. Just then, a magnificent run from Gavin McIntyre under pressure from almost the entire Vins defence saw him score in the corner. Minutes later a 2nd goal this time from Conor Brennan who fisted in from a Philip Carroll pass saw Brigid's suddenly look like they could win this match easily. The Vincents team never gave up though, and got their reward minutes later with a fine goal of their own to narrow the gap to 2 points.

The last couple of minutes were frantic. Vincents scored another point to bring the gap down to a single score and it was a very relieved Brigid's crowd that greeted the final whistle as they ran out winners by a point and now move on now to face the Champions of the Southside Kilmacud Crokes in the final.
