U11 Footballers Enjoy League Game vs Scoil Ui Chonaill in Beautiful Sunshine - Thu, 10 Jun 2010
On a fine sunny morning in Clontarf the Saint Brigids U11 footballers took on Scoil Ui Chonaill in the league. On the first pitch, Brigids played some fine football in the first half. Some brilliant saves by Ryan O'Sullivan kept Brigids in the game. In front of Ryan some great defending by Sean Mansfield and Eoin Hayden kept the Scoil Ui Chonaill forwards at bay. There were also some excellent long range points from Conall Burke and Cathal O'Brien after some great passing between Gary Lee, Michael Fraine and Brendan Byrne all of which saw Brigids up by 5 points to 1 at half time. Tiernan Gilvarry was playing his heart out at half-forward but had to go in to goal as a result of a niggling knee injury. The second half saw a great comeback from the Scoil Ui Chonaill lads. Two goals without reply saw them take the lead. Brian Moran made every effort to stop these attacks but another goal rocked the Brigids lads. To their credit though, they kept plugging away with some heroic saves from Gilvarry, great running play from Moran and O'Brien and again great blocking from Mansfielsd and Hayden. A switch between Michael Fraine and Ryan O'Sullivan brought the reward of a well taken goal from Fraine crashed home to the Scoil Ui Chonaill net followed by another great long range effort from Burke to peg things back. In the end, Brigids lost out by 2 goals in this one. Selectors for Brigids - Stewart Mansfield, Brendan Byrne and Michael Gilvarry. On the other pitch, the wiley Fermanagh man - Damien Callaghan engineered a terrific win for the Brigids lads. The Fermanagh influence was to the fore in this match with Damians son Conor being a constant thorn in the side of the oppositions defence winning and laying off crucial ball. Sean Breslin (another Fermanagh connection!) weighed in with some fine scores to push Brigids into a commanding lead. Paul Manning was posted between the sticks as he had a thigh injury but he spurred Shane Meehan and Aaron Dolly on to give commanding defensive displays. The physicality of James Gleeson further out the field was evident as he brought Liam Schmidt and Chris Hutcheson more and more into the play. Tomás Leen and Eoinn Devitt gave real all-round performences linking up midfield with attack. Our chief statistician Brian Manning informed us that the half time score was 4: 05 to 3:02 for Brigids and nobody would argue with him as he monitors such things with great attention! The lads went on to increase their tally to 9 goals and 4 points to Scoil Ui Chonaills 5 goals and 6 points. A great win for the lads. Selectors for Brigids - Damian Callaghan, Jim Leen and Brian Manning. Overall Stewart can be really happy with the lads performance this morning. It represented an overall win. The influence of Sean Murray and Cian Mullins (All Ireland U21 winners) help in the training sessions on Friday evenings plus the extra half hours running training is really paying off. A big thanks to Stewart, Cian and Sean for all their efforts. Also, a big thanks to all the mentors and all the support from parents as we look ahead in expectation of great things to come from this group of players.
