St Brigids 4-8 Kilmacud Crokes 1-7
St Brigids kept their push for Division 1 League honours on track with an impressive win against Kilmacud on a glorious spring afternoon in Russell Park last Saturday.
Brigids got off to a flying start, with early points from Aaron Carolan and Luke Ryan. However, Kilmacud then settled into the game and, as they began to dominate at midfield, leveled the match from two pointed frees. Crokes then caught the home team napping and struck for a goal midway through the half. The Russell Park lads didn't allow this score to unsettle them though and they responded well. Firstly, Ryan scored a slightly fortuitous goal, and then after both sides traded points, came a key moment in the game. Just before half time Aaron McDonald was quickest to respond as the ball broke from a great save by the Crokes keeper, and drilled the sliotar to the net. This was quickly followed by a great point from O'Sullivan to leave the half time score: Brigids 2-6 Crokes 1-5.
Brigids were put under severe pressure from the start of the second half as Crokes upped the tempo. However, the Russell Park backs stood firm to keep the home side's lead intact. In particular, goalie Kieran Cahill made two key saves, Greville a key block and Kavanagh a number of important clearances. Crokes were really putting it up to Brigids now, as they narrowed the gap to three points, and the game could have swung either way at this stage of the half. But Winters, Gaule and Carolan started to exert more influence in the middle third and Brigids made a few astute substitutions to freshen up their play with O'Doherty, in particular, making an impression.
Suddenly, the course of the game changed as Brigids surged clear. In a five-minute blitz, O'Sullivan and Purtill both hit the net and Winters scored a monster free to put daylight between the sides. A late point, brilliantly set up by Henry, from captain O'Sullivan was a great climax to this encounter and Brigids ran out deserved winners over a game Crokes team.
