U11 Hurlers Come Out on Top in Clash with Erins Isle - Wed, 25 Apr 2007

On a glorious sunny, if at times brisk Saturday morning St. Brigid's under11 hurlers travelled to Erin?s Isle with a little help from their Under 10s friends.

Playing with the wind a strong opening from Alex Fowler set Brigid's up for the first half with Donal Timoney opening Brigid?s account with a superb sideline cut. Sean Dunning was strong up front adding to Brigid's account with his own good score. Working tirelessly in midfield to keep Brigids ahead were Sean McGuane and Liam Connerton together with Jack Rafter playing up from Under 10s.

Early in the second half making sure the account was kept in Brigid?s favour Anthony Healy set up a great pass for another fine score from Donal Timoney. Nonetheless Isles began to find their range and challenged our boys making a number of fine scores despite strong defending from Daragh O'Neill and Geoff Brookes ably assisted in goals by John Lennon Maher playing up from Under 10s. While the Isle's rallied in the second half Brigids proved the stronger team on day and came away with the match.

Also playing with the wind in the first half on the near pitch Brigid's boys were in top form and got off to a good start as Donal Conroy opened the account for Brigids with a great point from the sideline. Followed quickly on the heels by another great point from Luke Purtill playing at centre half back for the first time. Not to be out done David Frayne followed up with a great puck from midfield to send the ball over the bar. This was to be the pattern of the game.

Not helping the Isles either, Eoin Mc Auley in goals made a number of great saves and kept the ball well cleared up the park. In the back Ciaran Meade consistently challenged the opposition's attack hindering the homeside's many attempts to score. Liam Campbell chased every chance to score upfront adding his own goal to Brigid's account. Getting stuck in Sean O'Malley was in fine form, making great catches and setting up a number of good scores to keep Brigids in the lead at half time.

An injured Tadhg Brannigan going into goals in the second half made a number of great saves with Conor Feeney adding to the score with a fine goal ably assisted by Conor Brown. Brigids remained strong in the second half and retained the lead to win the match comfortably.

Two great games of hurling were played with excellent performances from all with wonderful skills displayed, and every ball well contested.
