Paul Winters Scores 0-3 against Westmeath as Dublin Minor Hurlers Reach Leinster Final - Mon, 27 Jun 2011

Well done to Paul Winters who scored 0-3 as the Dublin Minor Hurlers progressed against Westmeath. Dublin had to withstand a Westmeath second-half rally before they eventually emerged victorious at Parnell Pk on Saturday evening.

Dublin 1-16 Westmeath 2-7

Dublin minor hurlers edged out Westmeath in Saturdays Leinster MHC semi-final to create history as the Dubs will feature in minor, u21 and senior provincial deciders in the same year for the first time.

The early omens were not good from a Dublin perspective as Westmeath looked full of purpose when racing into a 1-2 to 0-1 lead inside five minutes.

Their goal rocked Dublin back when corner-forward Niall O Brien blasted low to the net after just 12 seconds.

However, a brace of points from both Ciaran Kilkenny and Paul Winters steadied Dublin nerves and as the half progressed the home side began to exert a far greater influence.

At the interval Dublin led 0-11 to 1-3. Points from Emmett O Conghaile, an Aodhan Clabby free, and Cormac Costello increased the Dubs' advantage to eight points, 0-14 to 1-3.

But this game was far from over as a David Higgins goal, when he flicked Cathal Scally?s long range free to the net, inspired a Westmeath rally.

With five minutes remaining only two points separated the sides, 0-15 to 2-7, but sub Brian McCarthy's run was spotted by freetaker Clabby for the Boden lad to blast over.

As the game entered its last minute O Conghaile raced through the heart of the Westmeath defence before offloading to Oisin O Rorke who fired to the net.

Dublin face Kilkenny in the final next Sunday in Croke Park in the undercard to the senior final between the same counties.
