St Brigids Senior Camogie Team aim to make further History St. Brigids GAA senior camogie team have made history this month by being the first ever camogie team at Brigids to make it to a county final. The profile of the camogie section at Brigids has raised significantly in the last few years having achieved senior status for the first time five years ago, and what strides have been made in those five years! The panel of twenty strong players have made headlines across the city this year having being unbeaten in the group stages of the championship which brought them to meet Portebello in mid July. The Russell park side made easy work of their opposition that day beating Portebello by 10 points, with captain Paula Bruen clocking up 2-8 of their impressive score line. Next it was away to Round Towers of Clondalkin in the quarter final where Brigids ladies held Towers scoreless for 60 minutes and finished on a score-line of 0-0 to 3-8. having then reached the semi-final stages the buzz around the clubhouse started to build as members really got behind the team and realised that history was about to be made, these girls could go all the way to the county final something that has never been done before. The team began a gruelling training session of four nights a week and weekend friend lies to keep them in shape for the semis. The semi final took place at the 12th lock in Lucan in torrential rain and blustery condition last Sunday week and the Blanch and Castleknock lassies came out on top with a two pints to spare booking them their place in their first ever county final which will take place on September 4th at 2.00pm in O'Toole Pk. The camogie team at Brigids has plenty of interesting stories behind it and indeed many of the players are in some way related to members of the first camogie team in Brigids. Brigids camogie section was formed on 12th February 1970 by the then parish priest, Mrs. Wade, Mrs. Brennan, Mrs. O?Neill, Mrs. Larby, Mrs. Fitzgerald and a school teacher at St Brigids NS Mrs. Barrett. Christine Norton who plays at mid-field is a grand daughter of Mary Brennan and Danielle Powell is a grand daughter of Mrs. Wade. Some of the first ever camogie team are still active in the club today Marie Norton referees, Carmel McCormack is involved with referring and fundraising and Paula Gilhooly is still part of the current senior squad. With 2003 being a year to be remembered for the senior football team reaching the county final, and achieving Dublin and Leinster titles, how knows maybe 2004 will be the ladies year with the senior camogie team taking back our first ever senior title to Russell Park. Go n-eiri libh cailini we have a space in the cabinet cleared for the silver ware already.
