Under 10 Camogie Season Review for 2006 - Wed, 29 Nov 2006 The Under 10 Camogie squad have had a very successful year. Firstly, Under 10 is different from older grades in terms of some of its rules and principles. The key is that all players get to participate in every match. We have no limit to our match day squads and all players get to play. We run two teams each of nine a side and we can run unlimited substitutions. To focus the girls on stick work, kicking (the ball) is not permitted. The ball can only be lifted in the second half. We opened our outdoor season with two matches against Nh. Olaf in Russell Park on Saturday morning 1st of April. After a phenomenal start by our girls, we raced to an 8-1 lead by half-time and despite a stirring fight back by Nh Olaf in the second half, we finished with a 9-4 winning score line. The second match featuring our development squad had a very tight match and we could not get a breakthrough score against a well marshalled Nh Olaf defence. A single goal decided this tight match in favour of Nh Olaf. We continued our season with our weekly training sessions and a full league programme which have all been well attended by our girls. We have now over 60 girls involved with our under 10 squad. A particular thanks to Ashling and Ann from the senior team who have come along to help us. We entered two teams for the Under 10 blitz in the Phoenix Park on Saturday 28th October and this was a resounding success for all. We finished our season on grass with a series of three matches in Russell Park with our near neighbours St Oliver Plunketts following which we had a presentation of medals to all of the girls and a party. While we had great enthusiasm and performances throughout the season, we could not let that occasion pass without paying a particular tribute to three of our youngest players who have been with us from the start of the season when they were only five years old (and playing against girls up to twice their age) and they are Mikaela Griffin, Kate Elliott, and Maeve O'Regan. When we started the season we could not field two full teams without Mikaela, Kate and Maeve. All three got a great cheer when they came forward together to receive their medals. We have now moved to the artificial pitch and you will find us there every Tuesday night from 6.15pm to 7.00pm. Our Under 10 Player of the Year for 2006 is Orna Doherty. Before closing, we must say a fond farewell to those girls who will not be Under 10 for 2007 and they include Orna Doherty, Ciara Hayes, Alana Moran, Catherine Hegarty, Niamh Kyne and Doireann O'Donoghue. Our thanks go out to all of the under 10 girls for the season just ended and to all the parents who help us with training, matches etc. We again extend a plea for more help. This is the single biggest Camogie squad in Nh Brid and is run with just three coaches. An inter-county squad consists of a mere 30 players and has a backroom team of at least 12 people! |
