Under 13 & Under 14 Camogie Season Review for 2006 - Fri, 1 Dec 2006 Due to the success of our U 12 team during the previous season the U 13 team for 2006 was promoted to Division 1 for the League and Championship. They commenced the season with a panel of approximately 25 half of whom were still under 12. The step up in division proved difficult for this young group of players however they did win 2 of their 8 league games and finished a creditable 7th in the 9 team division. The division was very poorly organized by the County Board with only eight league matches for the teams and then the top 4 teams playing off. This meant that the teams finishing outside the top 4 had no competitive matches from the beginning of June to the 1st round of the championship in mid September. As a club we should lobby the county board to also provide for the weaker teams in each division. Therefore after a break of over 2 months the girls played their first round championship match against a very strong St.Vincents side who had played a number of competitive league play off matches during the previous weeks. Despite losing by a heavy score this was the team's best performance of the year when they played their hearts out from the first to the last minute. All the girls performed superbly during the season, continuing to play to the best of their ability in a very high standard of camogie. Hopefully this experience will stand to them next year. Emma O'Lone was our most improved and consistent player during the year and was named the Player of the Year for the Under 13s. Six of the under 13 panel attended the Dublin Development Squad sessions during the year. The initial squad of 90 players was eventually reduced to 36 after some trial matches. Ellen Hayden, Aine O Murchu and Laura Skehan were selected in the final panel of 36 that traveled to Toomevara to play two challenge matches against the local club. The highlight of the season proved to be the Under 14 Feile competition. As we did not have an under 14 team in 2006 the majority of the under 13 panel together with Laura Winters, Emma Devitt, Anita O'Brien, Ella Doherty and Sara Dowling (this was the first time ever that these girls had the opportunity to play camogie at their own age level) from the under 15 panel got together to form a Feile team. The team won the Division 3 Feile without conceding a score during the competition. They coped with the group matches fairly easily and beat St Finans in the semi-final. However, having watched Setanta in the other semi-final the mentors were worried about our prospects heading into Sunday's final. We needn't have worried as the girls kept the best til last and played wonderfully fast and skillful camogie to defeat a brave Setanta team by a scoreline of 6:9 to no score. Well done to all the girls for what proved to be a wonderful week-end for the club. |
