U14 Feile Camogie Team Claim 2nd Feile Title in Two Years - Tue, 27 May 2008

What a wonderful weekend. May 11th will be etched in the minds of our star U14 Camogie feile winners for ever.

Feile kicked off on Saturday morning at 9.30 where the girls met up in Russell Park and headed to St Finian?s in Swords. The first match was against Crumlin which Naomh Brid convincingly won 4-1 to 0-1. The girls had a moment of doubt in their second match to Lucan where they were beaten by the only score in the game , a goal from Lucan. Their winning style returned with gusto for their next game against Raheny which Naomh Brid won 4-2 to 1-1. Heading in to the last game of the round against Ballinteer St Johns, the group was very tight with Lucan Sarsfields on 5 points, Naomh Brid on 4 and Ballinteer St Johns on 3. This was soon resolved when Naomh Brid won the match and took first place in the group. For the semi finals the girls met Na Fianna who were runners up of group 2. Naomh Brid put in another gutsy performance to earn themselves a place in a Feile final. The opposition for the final, to be played the next day, was against their only weak spot of the day ? Lucan Sarsfields!

On Sunday May 10th the sun shone brightly and supporters led the way with flags, Brigids gear and our team mascot the giant bear "Brigid". The atmosphere in Lucan Sarsfields, venue for the finals was electric. Huge thanks to all the supporters for their non stop encouragement along the way. There was some disappointment with the long grass of the pitch, which was surprising being a camogie Feile final. The girls were led onto the pitch by joint captains Ruth Dargan and Siobhan Cahill who did a brilliant job in motivating their team throughout the weekend. Sarah Hawkshaw got the first score with a point from a 45 after about 7 minutes, shortly after Naomh Brid suffered the heartbreak of a disallowed goal. Then to add to our concerns Sarah Hawkshaw, who was playing a pivotal role at midfield was injured and had to be substituted. The team showed their real fighting spirit with Clodagh Collins and Helen Sweeney closing down Lucans midfield play and Sinead O?Farrelly and Deirdre Murphy causing havoc with their darting solo runs, not forgetting the stalwart defence from Siobhan Cahill and Emma Skeehan. Naomh Brid found the net thanks to Ruth Dargan and went ahead 1-1 to no score. By half time the score was Naomh Brid 1-1 to Lucan 1-0.

For the second half the roars from the side line could surely be heard as far away as Castleknock and Blanchardstown, when Megan Mahar found the back of the net. However once again Lucan responded with a goal. And so it went on, with Ruth Dargan finding the net once more only to be followed by a third goal by Lucan which left a 1 point margin in Brigid?s favour. With minutes left we fought to the final whistle and it finally came. Sinead O Farrelly was the deserving player of the match. This was an outstanding team effort and while not everyone is mentioned above, every team member contributed to this success. The panel of players was Aisling Byrne, Aoife Jordan, Aoife Kelly, Caoimhe Ryan, Carolyn Elliot, Christina Schmieder, Claudia Boucher, Clodagh Collins, Clodagh Fulston, Deirdre Beehan, Deirdre Murphy, Emma Skeehan, Helen Sweeney, Laura Cronin, Maedbh O Hehir, Megan Maher, Muireann Browne, Rebecca Cummins, Ruth Dargan, Sarah Connolly, Sarah Hawkshaw, Sarah Jane Heuston, Sinead O?Farrelly, Siobhan Cahill. Coached by Anne Hawkshaw and Kevin Cronin, first aid by Marion Cronin and team administration by Máire Byrne.

The triumphant winners returned to Castleknock and did a lap of honour around the village with noise levels not previously heard in Castleknock. The afternoon concluded in Trentuno where the team captains presented medals to the players.

Comhghairdeachas gach duine ar an ócaíd iontach seo.
