Senior Camogie Season Report for 2008 - Tue, 25 Nov 2008
Our Senior Camogie Team had a very good season in 2008. The girls played in a total of 24 matches in all competitions losing just three matches during the season. Open Cup The team set out their stall from early on in the year, making it to the Open Cup Final, and winning a really tough match against Naomh Jude, this was a great win for the team, and the girls played super from the group stages in this competition right through to the final. This win was the first time to win any competition at senior level for Naomh Brid which the girls can be very proud of. Senior (B) League The team played a total of 14 league matches, home and away, winning 12 games in all, our girls went through the first half of the league unbeaten by playing some great camogie. We started off the second half of the season playing well but we suffered our first defeat to Naomh Jude, this brought an end to our unbeaten run of 15 games between cup and league, this was a game that Judes knew they had to win with us being their main rivals in the league, but our girls bounced back and knew they had to win their last 3 league games and a back-match against Skerries Harps. Going into the last week in the league the girls where forced by the Dublin County Board to play their last 2 league games away within 2 days, the girls had to play Ballyboden first on a Tuesday and Skerries second on a Thursday of the same week, the girls beat Ballyboden and knew that we had to beat Skerries to force a league play-off against Judes to see who would be the league champions, unfortunately our girls lost to Skerries Harps and their dreams of playing Judes for the league crown had been dashed. The girls did very well to have been still within a chance of winning the league with some girls away, some girls out injured and with some girls working, we struggled for a team for a large part of the second half of the season. A big thank you must go to the girls from our junior team who subbed up over the second half of the season because without these girls we would have not been able to field for some games, thanks again girls for all your help from myself and Keith and from the girls on the senior team. This meant that our girls finished runners up to Naomh Judes in the league. Well done girls. Senior (B) Championship The girls where drawn in a group 3 of the Championship, along with Ballinteer St.Johns, Naomh Fionbarra and Kilmacud Crokes, The girls won all three games in there group and by doing so topped there group, by playing with great team work and being focussed in all three games, and taking it one game at a time, by topping their group this gave the girls a home draw in the Quarter-Final, the girls where drawn against Lucan Sarsfields ,Lucan who had just won there league which is just one division below us in Senior (B) Div 2 and where on a high, Our girls knew that this Qrt-Final was going to be a tough game, and by god it was. Next up was Skerries Harps in the Semi-Final, The girls knew what was at stake, after Skerries denied them the chance to take on Judas in a League Play-Off, The girls where really up for this game, Opting to play with the wind with us in the first half, our girls never let Sherries settle and we built up a big score in the first half and snuffed out anything Sherries threw at the girls in the second half our girls played their best game of the season to-date with a all round great team performance to set up a Championship Final date with Naomi Jude. The Championship Final against Judes was going to be a big test for our girls, Judes got off to the better start in the first half but our girls came in at half-time level at 5 points each and by not playing anything like we had been doing all season long, in the second half Judes started the better team and where on top, and where a lot more physical than our girls but again our girls never gave up hope, even after Naomh Jude went into a 5 point lead going into the last few minutes of the game, but yet again our girls came back scoring 1-1 going into injury time ,that just left us within a point of Naomh Judes, the girls threw everything at Judes but Judes held out strong and in the end we ran out of time to get a draw and Judes held on to win the game by one point. What could one say to our girls, to lose a championship final by one point for the second season in a row, this was heartbreaking for them. But overall this season : The girls put in a huge amount of time and effort in training and in all their matches .They can be very proud of themselves . Girls from Myself and Keith and all within the club we are very proud of what you have achieved. I hope you find the strength to come back next year and get a just reward for all your hard work. It?s not going to be easy but together we CAN do it!!! I ?d like to finish by wishing both Catherine King & Aisling Dargan a speedy recovery from the injuries they sustained playing for us this season, and a huge thank you to all your families for their support throughout the year. Many Thanks Dec. |
