Senior Camogie Suffer Champo Final Heart Break Against Skerries Harps - Mon, 5 Oct 2009

Skerries Harps 1 - 7 Naomh Bríd 0 - 7

For the 3rd Year in a row our Senior Camogie Girls suffered Championship Heartbreak. It was so disappointing for the girls as they had been in tremendous form all year. A big thank you to the large crowd who came out to support the girls. Big thanks to Willie Tyrell & Declan Powell for their great efforts through out the year with the team.

A first county Senior B title for Skerries Harps but a third heartbreak for Naomh Bríd in as many years. On a superb surface in Craobh Chiaráin, conditions were ideal for hurling but a stiff breeze playing down the field made matters difficult for both teams. Skerries Harps won the toss and elected to play against the elements and at the end it could be said that the gamble paid off. Naomh Bríd were first to score inside a minute from a 45 by the excellent Emma Sweeney.

Two minutes later they received a further boost when the impressive Katie Murphy pointed from play. But they needed the tonic of a goal in this half and the Skerries full back of Tara Magee, Val van Veen and Yvonne Hannon ensured that capable keeper Clodagh Bolger was well protected. Harps had their hopes raised by the 14th minute when points by Orlaith Durkan and Emer Murphy (free) had the sides on level terms. They could well have been in front as 15 year old Rachael OFlaherty was narrowly wide when a goal chance fell to her.

But Paula Bruen was leading her side from full back and from play and long range frees her deliveries were falling in the Harps half of the field. Another Katie Murphy point restored their lead followed by a second Emma Sweeney free but 0-4 to 0-2 at half time was not a commanding lead. They also struck 6 wides in the half. Immediately after the break they upped their challenge and again Emma Sweeney pointed from a placed ball. A goal for either side was going to be decisive as throughout the field the sides were evenly matched. Kathy Gilmore and Aoife Halpin put in some great blocks and up front Roisin Leneghan and Niamh Murphy were always dangerous. The pace and workrate of Ciara Durkan was a constant threat and the Dublin senior player knocked over an inspiration point in the 33rd minute. Emer Murphy followed up three minutes later with another free and the margin was down to a point.

When a ball was placed across the face of the Naomh Bríd goal in the 38th minute, it fell at the feet of Orlaith Durkan and from close range her first timed effort beat the excellent Colette Coady in the Naomh Bríd goal. Two more points by 15 year old Robyn Kehoe and Emer Murphy pushed Skerries five points clear by the 19th minute.

But Naomh Bríd are a resilient outfit and midfielders Elaine Duncan and Sherry Mannion as well as Joanne Bruen, Katie Murphy and Emma Sweeney rallied to the cause. Skerries midfielders Ciara Copeland and Nicola Mehigan also enjoyed good spells. Aisling Kelly found the range with a great point and Emma Sweeney skimmed the bar with a great effort. As time ticked away, Naomh Bríd went in search of the levelling goal but the Skerries defence where Jean Murphy was outstanding just held out. The match was ably refereed by Karl OBrien.

Naomh Bríd: Colette Coady, Fiona Clifford, Paula Bruen, Joanne Bruen, Eimear OLeary, Annie Kirwan, Emma Sweeney (0-4, 3f), Elaine Duncan, Sherry Mannion, Katie Murphy (0-2), Christine Norton, Niamh Adams, Aisling Kelly (0-1), Danielle Powell, Mary Galvin

Subs: Laura Skehan, Siobhan Cahill
