Awesome Performance by St Brigids Feile Team Leads to Two in a Row - Sun, 1 Nov 2009
October bank holiday weekend - a most unusual weekend for Feile competition but St Brigids were not complaining when for the second year in a row they arrived back to the club with the silverware, this year from the higher Division 2. What a performance it was, where over a total of 6 matches St Brigids scored 23 goals 17 points and conceded 0 goals and 4 points! More than half of these scores came from the wonderfully talented and well deserving player of the tournament Sarah Hawkshaw. The four group matches were run on Sunday 25th and the competition was hosted by a very hospitable Erins Isle. St Brigids settled in very quickly winning their first match against Erins Isle 1-4 to 0-0. Following this, St Brigids faced a local derby against Castleknock but were convincing winners at 5-4 to 0-1. They followed this up against Naomh Fionnbarra with a convincing score of 7-0 to 0-0. The final match of the qualifiers was against Ballinter St Johns which again St Brigids won 3-1 to 0-1. This left St Brigids clear winners of group B. For the Semi Final they faced Naomh Mearnóg. Although the girls had a long day they played an outstanding semi-final and added to their score with a final score of 5-2 to 0-0. On Monday 26th the sun shone brightly and the girls appeared relaxed. They met early for a quick session in Russell Park and then headed to Erins Isle for a 12.00 throw in. The opposition in the final were Na Fianna. We were thrilled with the support we received and would like to thank all the supporters for their non stop encouragement along the way. It took a while for the girls to settle and the match in the first half was very tight. The defence of Laura Cronin, Meabh O Hehir and Niamh Mc Kenna had to work really hard in the first half and we were very grateful to have a truly skilled goalie in Niamh O Neill, just 12 years of age and playing in her first Feile, an inspired performance. Sophie Lyons put in a tremendous block which was definitely heading for goal. The persistence of the half back line of Amy Farrell, Aoife Jordan and Orna O Doherty was inspiring. Caomhie Ryan and Sarah Hawkshaw left no patch of ground uncovered in midfield. The half time score of 0-2 to 0-1 in favour of Brigids left little room for comfort. However after the break Brigids returned to their blazing dominating play. Sarah Hawkshaw scored a couple of points and then a beautiful goal from play, at last heart beats returned to normal on the sideline. The forwards came in to their own and in a great move from Rachel Boyle to Megan Maher to Aisling Byrne the sliotar ended in the back of the net once again. Brigids continued to storm on with great play by Carolyn Elliot and Ciara Hayes until at last the final whistle blew with a score line of 2-6 to 0-2. This was a remarkable achievement for any team but most especially when you realise that this team only got together for Feile and managed just a few sessions as a team prior to the competition ? well done one and all. The panel of players was Aisling Byrne, Alison Proudfoot, Amy Farrell, Aoife Jordan, Caoimhe Ryan, Carolyn Elliot, Celine O Brien, Ciara Hayes, Claire O Halloran, Clodagh Moffett, Deirdre Beehan, Gilla Clarke, Laura Cronin, Meabh O Hehir, Megan Maher, Niamh Kyne, Niamh O Neill, Niamh Mc Kenna, Orna O Doherty, Rachel Boyle, Sarah Hawkshaw (C), Sophie Lyons. Coached by Anne Hawkshaw and Kevin Cronin. Team administration: Máire Byrne and first aid by Marion Cronin. The triumphant winners returned to Castleknock and did a lap of honour around the village with noise levels not previously heard in Castleknock. The afternoon concluded in Trentuno where the team captain presented medals and a souvenir team photo to the players. Comhghairdeachas gach duine ar an ócaíd iontach seo.
