U12 Ladies Footballers perform brilliantly to edge out Skerries Harps in Champo - Thu, 1 Jun 2006

St Brigid's 5-5 Skerries Harps 5-4

In what was their best performance to date, and with their ace goal scorer Sinead O'Farrelly in match-winning form, St Brigid's U 12 Girls came out on top in this keenly fought first round championship encounter against Skerries Harps. St Brigid's got off to a flying start with early goals from Michelle Horan and Sinead O'Farrelly. Skerries however, fought back tenaciously and scored 2 - 3 without reply. Indeed, Skerries could have scored even more were it not for resolute defending by Emma Skehan, Bethany Leen and Megan Sheridan for St. Brigids.

Towards the end of the half St Brigids mid-field of Sophie Freeman and Deirdre Murphy started to win good possession and with Ruth Dargan, Aoife Kelly and Kate Conway working really hard in the forwards they created a number of goal scoring chances. Eventually, a second goal and a point from Sinead O'Farrelly and a point from Deirdre Murphy prior to half time, left Brigid's two points to the good going in to the break.

Sinead O'Farrelly was again on target after the break scoring a goal and a point to leave St Brigid's six points up. Again Skerries mounted a strong challenge and scored three goals to leave them a goal in front. With St Brigids under pressure, the introduction of Clodagh Fullston and Susan Parnell brought the team back to life. Inspired by their willingness to fight for every ball, St Brigids began to reassert their authority. Wonderful harrying and blocking by Siobhan Cahill, Alison Kelly and strong running with the ball out of defence by Helen Sweeney, also laid the foundation for a spirited fight back.

A great save and intelligent clearance by goalkeeper Maeve O'Hehir saw St Brigids work the ball down the pitch for Sinead O'Farrelly to net her fourth goal and put the game level. With Rebecca Cummins working tirelessly in the forwards, she won a 50/50 ball and then laid it off to St Brigids other ace forward on the day, Michelle Horan to burst her way through the defence and score a point to put St Brigids into the lead. From the kick out Deirdre Murphy won possession again and this time Sinead O'Farrrelly finished off a well worked move to put Bigids two points ahead. With time running out, Skerries mounted a final challenge and worked the ball down the pitch in an effort to get the match winning goal. Again, sterling defence saved the day and Skerries were forced to take a point leaving Brigids the winners by one point.
