Dublin U16 Ladies Footballers defeat Cork to be Crowned All-Ireland Champions - Wed, 20 Sep 2006
Congrats to the Dublin U16 Ladies Footballers who turned in a fine performance to overcome favourites Cork. Well done to our club representatives Shona Barrett, Enya Farrell & Noel Healy. Last Saturday saw the Under 16 team claim the 2006 All Ireland title with an emphatic victory over Cork in Cashel. Dublin got off to a bright start and had scored 1-4 before Cork opened their account. Cork managed to close the gap to 2 points after 20 minutes but a scoring spree at the end of the first half saw the Dubs lead 2-10 to 1-3 at the break. The decision of the management team to use a sweeper system paid dividends and completely frustrated the Cork efforts. From the resumption Dublin struck for another goal to knock the wind from the Cork sails and by the time the final whistle sounded the scoreline read Dublin 5-16 Cork 1-10. Dublin had heroes all over the pitch ? Hannah Tyrrell in goal saved a penalty in the second half only for the referee to order a retake, but again Hannah was up to the task to break Cork hearts with a fabulous save. Hannah was rewarded for her efforts when picking up the player of the match award. Sinead O?Mahony kept Cork star Rhona Buckley scoreless from play. Ailish McKenna, Sinead Goldrick and Lisa Murphy never put a foot wrong in the halfback line. Amy Connolly and Niamh McEvoy controlled midfield. Sinead Cullen, Debroah Geraghty and Aisling Johnston kept the scoreboard operator busy throughout. The Dublin team on the day was ? Hannah Tyrrell (Round Tower Clondalkin), Shona Barrett (St Brigids), Sinead O?Mahony (Skerries Harps), Karen McGlynn (Skerries Harps), Sinead Goldrick (Foxrock Cabinteely), Ailish McKenna (Castleknock), Fiona Hudson 0-1 (Fingallians), Amy Connolly 0-1 (Foxrock Cabinteely), Niamh McEvoy (St Sylvesters), Aisling Johnston 0-4 (Cro R Naofa), Natalia Hyland 1-2 (Ballyboden St Endas), Noelle Healy 1-1 (St Brigids), Lisa Murphy (Cro R Naofa), Sinead Cullen 2-2 (Skerries Harps), Deborah Geraghty 0-4 (Castleknock) Subs: Vicky Browne (Fingallians) for Sinead Goldrick, Amy Ring (Foxrock Cabinteely) for Deborah Geraghty, Orlagh Egan (Na Fianna) for Aisling Johnston, Aoife Burke (St Judes) for Natalia Hyland, Sinead Loughran 1-1 (Foxrock Cabinteely) for Noelle Healy, Paula McGrath (Ballyboden St Endas), Arlene Cushen (Na Fianna), Enya Farrell (St Brigids), Jenny May Finn (Scoil Ui Chonaill), Phillippa Green (Kilmacud Crokes), Rachel Mulligan (Scoil Ui Chonaill), Shauna Cannon (Ballyboden St Endas), Sinead Cummiskey (Parnells),Roisin Ryan (Ballyboden St Endas). The management team was Dermot Connolly (Foxrock Cabinteely), Pat Ring (Foxrock Cabinteely), Jenni Ni Mhuiri (Ballinteer St Johns), Orla Colreavy (Naomh Mearnog) and Siobhan Walsh (Naomh Mearnog). The team received a heroes welcome in Malahide village and Naomh Mearnog GAA when they returned to celebrate their victory. Team manager Dermot Connolly thanked the County Board and the players parents and clubs for the support throughout the long season. The future of Dublin Ladies football looks bright if these girls stay together and on Saturday night the girls were already beginning to plan the defence of their title in 2007. |
