U12 Ladies Footballers win Division 1 Shield defeating Kilmacud - Mon, 30 Oct 2006 St Brigids 5-10 Kilmacud Crokes 1-3 In their first season in Division 1, St Brigid's U12 girls were successful in winning the Shield final against a very strong Kilmacud Crokes team. Having been narrowly defeated by Kilmacud in the league earlier in the season, it was clear that St Brigid's would have to perform to the best of their ability to overcome their opponents this time round. Indeed, it was Kilmacud who started the livelier of the two teams and after five minutes, worked the ball well into their full forward for her to drive the ball into the St Brigid's goal. St Brigid's responded with a long range point from Deirdre Murphy and thereafter both teams traded points in a closely fought first half in which St Brigid's shooting was a bit wayward. They were however kept in the game by some solid goalkeeping by Siobhan Cahill and resolute defence by their full back line of Bethany Leen, Emma Skehan, and Alison Kelly. Meanwhile, in the forwards, Kate Conway, Rebecca Cummins and Aoife Kelly battled hard to create scoring opportunities. Starting the second half two points in arrears, St Brigid's midfield and forwards stepped up a gear. Within five minutes of the restart, St Brigid's top scorer on the day, Michelle Horan, went on a scoring spree, notching up two points and the first of her two goals. These scores acted as a spur to St Brigid's and with their mid-field of Aideen Brennan and Sophie Freeman dominating their opponents, the supply of ball to the forwards provided numerous scoring opportunities which they took with great aplomb. Sinead O?Farrelly proved to be deadly accurate from frees and caused havoc in the Kilmacud defence with her weaving solo runs. She was ably assisted by centre half forward Stephanie Troy who put in a sterling performance capped by a wonderful goal from 20 meters following a great solo run. A hallmark of the tenacity and determination of St Brigid's second half performance was the complete dominance of their half back line of Megan Sheridan, Deirdre Murphy and Helen Sweeney who shut out their opponents and provided a master class in blocking and ball distribution. Changes to the forward line with the introduction of Ruth Dargan, Ellie Stone, Sarah Hawkshaw and Meabh O'Hehir served to keep the pressure on Kilmacud and their great contribution yielded a well taken goal by Ruth Dargan in the closing minutes. By the time the final whistle came St Brigid's had outscored their opponents by 5-7 to 0-1 in the second half and they were deserving winners of the title.
