Ladies Junior Footballers Finish Season at the All Ireland Sevens in Naomh Mearnog - Mon, 13 Oct 2008
The junior ladies team took part in the all ireland 7s tournament in Naohm Mearnog on Saturday 26th September. The girls had had a bit of a shaky start to the season but once Willie Tyrrell and Peter Rice came on board, they turned this around to progress really well as the year went on. The day of the 7s was unusually sunny with some sunburned faces at the post tournament celebration. Unfortunately the girls found it tough going against the first 2 teams who were both county champions but ran Rathcline to the wire in their final game in a 16 goal thriller, only to lose out marginally on a scoreline of 8-7 to 8-4. Despite the limited success on the field, the 12 girls on the squad and the other junior team members who turned up to support had a brilliant day and aim to make this an annual event. Julie Carbery had made sure the team was well kitted out for the day by arranging new tops for all. The girls presented Willie and Peter with Bainisteoir jackets in recognition of all they had done for the team this year and to make sure they looked the part on the sideline. Mary O'Connor also received a small gift for all the assistance she gave to the junior ladies this year, from arranging pitches to supplying training bibs when a certain member of the team forgot the jerseys (no names mentioned!). The squad surprised their captain with a Brigids jersey with her name and favourite number 4. This day rounded off a very enjoyable year for the girls. They suffered at the beginning of the year due to starting back training late but really progressed later in the season and are looking forward to a great 2009. The squad has decided to start back training next week to keep our fitness going and new and returning members are always welcome. Contact Jan Rice on 087-9965944 for details of training. At the last training session before the 7 a sides, a number of awards were made. Winners are below, congratulations to all and see u next week for winter training.
