St Brigids under 14 girls played their county final in Westmanstown on Saturday 3rd February against Foxrock/Cabinteely. The girls got off to a great start in the first 10 minutes with 3 points from Aisling King and one each from Roisin Kane and Michelle O'Reilly to go into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead. Foxrock/Cabinteely came back into the game with 2 well taken points but the Brigids girls were very unlucky not to get the opening goal of the game after Sinead O'Farrelly had a good shot saved and then shot narrowly wide.

Aisling King scored her 4th point of the game to stem the comeback and the defence worked hard to force Foxrock/Cabinteely into shooting wide on a number of occasions with excellent blocks from Shauna Hickson and Aisling Woodgate in particular. Aisling King added a point before Rachel Troy scored the first goal of the game after 20 minutes. This was quickly followed 2 minutes later by another goal from Aisling King to put the St. Brigids girls in the driving seat. Helen O'Connor made an outstanding save to keep the opposition at bay but could do nothing about a goal from point blank range from the Foxrock/Cabinteely full forward.

This was quickly followed by a point as the Foxrock/Cabinteely girls fought back strongly. Emma Davitt scored a point to help stem the tide after an exceptional passing move involving captain Michelle O'Reilly. But the opposition again battled back and just on the stroke of half time scored a goal with a high shot to the net. This left the St. Brigids girls 4 points up at half time and still facing a tough battle to become champions.

The second half began badly when Foxrock/Cabinteely got a point after the ball came back off the post to put just one score between the teams. Sinead O'Farrelly had been proving a thorn in the side of the opposition defence and showed fantastic soccer skills to volley a high ball to the net past the Foxrock/Cabinteely goalkeeper. The St. Brigids forwards defended from the front to prevent the kickout being cleared with a determined block from Rachel Troy which led to a point for Michelle O'Reilly. Foxrock/Cabinteely showed their steel and still refused to be beaten. They scored 2 points in quick succession to claw back some of the St. Brigids lead.

Sinead O'Farrelly then turned provider for a Rachel Troy goal which was just deserts for the hard working no. 10. Helen O'Connor had kept her concentration well and saved to keep the lead intact. She then tipped a shot over the bar fora Foxrock point while Sinead O'Farrelly scored 2 points for St. Brigids. Foxrock/Cabinteely got their last socre of the game in the 22nd minute of the second half but from then on, the St. Brigids girls showed their will to win the final and went on a scoring spree. Emma Davitt scored a long range goal after recovering from injury and centre back Caroline Brogan got in on the action with a goal and a point. The scoring was finished by a goal from Olivia Smartt and points from Michelle O'Reilly and Aisling King.

There were great celebrations at the final whistle from the girls and their management. The game was much closer than the final scoreline of 7-13 to 2-10 indicates and it took grit and determination from the girls to secure the victory. The level of shooting was outstanding but it was the hassling and blocking from the entire team that won the day for St. Brigids. The future of the club looks bright if this game is anything to go by. Congratulations to the girls and their management.
