Junior Ladies Footballers Start Championship Campaign With Win - Tue, 22 May 2007

St Brigids 3-5 Naomh Mearnog/St. Sylvesters 2-5

The St. Brigids junior ladies team got off to a great start in their championship campaign away to Naomh Mearnog/St. Sylvesters on Wednesday 17th. Playing into the wind in the first half, the girls went in 2 points up at half time thanks to a goal from Louise Prior and points from Linda Deasy and Michelle Dunne. Mary Laffan pulled off multiple saves in the goal to keep a clean sheet in this half.

The home team started brighter in the second half and goaled twice to go into the lead. The Brigids then dug deep and clawed their way back into the game with 2 quick goals from Michelle Dunne and Fin NiDhomhnaill. Aine Burke was dominating midfield at this stage and Enya Farrell scored a long range point from centre forward.

Leanne Greene and FinNi Dhomhnaill completed the scoring with 2 points and then it was down to the defence to put in a backs to the wall performance to keep Naomh Mearnog/St. Sylvesters at bay for the last 10 minutes to win by a goal in the end. Joanne Bruen and Julie Carbery were outstanding in breaking up the attacks.

This was an excellent battling performance from the St. Brigids girls in very bad conditions. They now look forward to the second of three championship group games at home to Na Fianna in Russell park at 7-30PM on 23rd March. All support for the girls that night would be appreciated. Training continues on Monday nights and new players are always welcome. Contact Janette Rice on 087-9965944 for details.
