St Brigid's Ciaran McCallan wins Masters Doubles Title 2016-04-24 00:06:00

St Brigid’s player Ciaran McCallan made amends for his recent loss in the singles  final by winning the All-Ireland Masters B Doubles final at the O’Loughlin Gaels handball venue. Partnered by Na Fianna’s Christy Donnelly, Ciaran showed that he had learned from the singles campaign as he put on a display of precision killing to help defeat their Tyrone opponents, Seamus McCrory and Rory Grogan.

The Tyrone pair started off the stronger and led 15-4 at an early point of the match. Gradually the Dublin players got to grips with the match playing their way into contention by fighting hard in every rally. Despite falling 18-7 behind they persevered and came back ace by ace to put the Tyrone pair under pressure at 14-18. However a loose couple of rallies at that point handed the first game to the Tyrone pair on a score of 21-15.

The second game started well for Ciaran and Christy through improved serving and cutting out unforced errors. Christy’s three-wall serve into the rear left hand corner paid rich dividends as it drew a relatively weak response which Ciaran quickly dispatched to the bottom of the front wall. This combination of Christy’s serving and Ciaran’s killing continued throughout the game and they ran out fairly easy winners of the second game 21-10 to force the match into a third and deciding game.

It was clear after the re-start that the Dublin pair were supreme as they forced the pace right from the start. There were some terrific ralllies where all four players were completely stretched in returning the ball and all four risked all by diving to retrieve low shots. The gain in confidence by the Dublin pair was evident as they went for their shots when they got a chance while the Tyrone pair found that the shots which were successful in the first game were now falling short. With Christy predominantly playing the rear of the court and Ciaran up front their combination play was excellent. With excellent serving, very few unforced errors, great retrievals and crucial kills they determined the pace and tactics of the rallies. The final score of 15-21, 21-10, 21-3 fully reflected the ebb and flow of the match and the eventual dominance of the Dublin pair. After their win the Dublin pair expressed great satisfaction at winning , particularly in the way they had turned the tables after losing the first game.

Well done Ciaran and Christy!
