Gallant U15 Hurlers Just Fall Short in League SemiFinal V Raheny 2014-10-20 18:57:00

St Brigids 1-8  Raheny 1-14

St. Brigids were gallant losers in this league semi-final to Raheny in St. Annes Park.  The home side were fresh from winning the Championship two weeks ago and came into the game as firm favourites.
Playing into a strong wind, Brigids made an encouraging start and were first to raise the white flag from a John Maher free.  Raheny then responded with four unanswered points before Maher pulled one back with another free after 10 minutes.  The Brigids defence was placing huge pressure on their opponents, forcing Raheny to hit seven wides over the course of the next fifteen minutes.  In that period, both teams traded two points apiece with Maher and Michael Fraine scoring for Brigids.  This left the home side leading by three points at half time: Brigids 0-4 Raheny 0-7.

In the second half, Raheny started brightly and two points stretched their lead further.  A booming score from Cathal O Brien was Brigids response as the game started to heat up.  Raheny responded with a point, but then Maher converted another free.  The momentum was with Brigids now and when a Sean Mansfield free, from midfield, dropped into the danger zone, Maher pulled on the sliotar to fire the ball to the net.  The gap was down to two points with twenty minutes to go.

Over the next ten minutes, it was nip and tuck with a Mansfield free and another huge O Brien scored matched by two points from Raheny. With ten minutes to go, however, the home team struck for a crucial goal, and followed up with a quick point to lead by six.  Despite laying siege to the Raheny goal for the remainder of the game, Brigids were unable to break down a resolute home defence.

Mentor Paddy Winters paid huge credit to a severely depleted Brigids team who performed heroics today in the face of an injury crisis.  Winters said that 'it would be impossible to pick out any individual performance as each and every player was immense today'.  James O Connell, David Hawkshaw, Darragh Wade, Sean Breslin, Conall Burke and Matt McDonnell all key members of the team over the season - were missing this morning.  But the boys just got on with it and its important to mark the progress made by this team, who were promoted from Division 3 last season.
