Senior Ladies Reach Championship Semi Finals 2014-05-30 20:22:00

Ladies Football Senior Championship

Fingallians 1-12 St Brigids 3-09

It was all to play for when the St Brigids Senior ladies travelled to Fingallians for their final group game of the Senior championship on Wednesday evening. A place in the semi final was at stake for whichever team left the pitch as winners. Fingallians won the championship in 2013 and weren't going to hand over the crown easily while St Brigids were yet to win a match having drawn with Ballyboden and lost narrowly to Foxrock in their previous games.

It took Brigids ten minutes to settle into the game and by that stage Fingallians had 0-04 on the board without reply. The Russell Park ladies had plenty of possession in the first half but had trouble converting their chances early on. With ten minutes to go in the half, Brigids were finally coming into their own, as scores from Colleen Barrett, Noelle Healy and the excellent free taking of Elaine Kelly (0-07 in total) hauled the visitors back into contension. Excellent defensive play by Deirdre Murphy who controlled the half back line supplied Noelle Healy who scored a fine goal just before half time, making it 1-06 to 0-06 to St. Brigids at the break.

Both teams came out after the interval with a renew vigour but it was Brigids who struck first when Leah Mullins claimed Brigids second goal after winning a brilliant ball ahead of her marker. The green flag was raised for a third time when Colleen Barrett hit the top corner of the net moments later. St. Brigids worked very well defensively pushing Fingallians out with Clare McCormack, Shona Barrett and Lyndsey Andrews particularly influential.

Defending championship Fingallians pushed hard late on and but for some excellent goalkeeping by Ciara Trant the result may have been in doubt. As it was the Brigids girls who go through to the Semi finals which will take place against Na Fianna in Mobhi Road on Wednesday July 2nd. Na Fianna beat Brigids in the semi final stages by a point after extra time last year so the Brigids girls will be looking to right that wrong!
