It is with profound sadness that we heard of the passing of our former Club Secretary and current Assistant Secretary, Mary O’Connor - another deeply felt loss for St Brigid’s GAA Club and the wider Dublin GAA community.

It is widely agreed that volunteers are the backbone of a GAA club, but occasionally, a figure comes along who is not just the backbone, but the heart and soul of the club. Mary was truly the heart and soul of St Brigid’s. Her contribution went far beyond any role or title - she gave countless hours of selfless service, always with quiet dedication, warmth and humility.

As Secretary, she was at the centre of everything, guiding the day-to-day running of the club with calm wisdom, care and exceptional attention to detail. She brought people together, supported volunteers and mentors and offered a welcoming hand to new members who came through our gates.

Mary’s impact extended well beyond St Brigid’s through her commitment to the Ladies Gaelic Football Association. From her early involvement as a club delegate to her leadership roles at county level, she played a central part in the growth and success of ladies' football in Dublin. She took great pride in the achievements of Dublin teams, particularly the contribution of St Brigid’s players to that success.

In 2024, Mary’s outstanding service was recognised nationally when she received the President’s Award from Larry McCarthy of the Gaelic Athletic Association - a fitting tribute to a lifetime devoted to our games and our community.

Above all, Mary was deeply appreciated and genuinely loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her kindness, generosity and unwavering commitment to others and St Brigid’s Club made her truly special - we remember her with heartfelt gratitude and affection.

On behalf of everyone in St Brigid’s, we extend our deepest sympathies to her husband, Jim, her daughter Helen, her son Kevin, her extended family and wide circle of friends.
